Reports - 5 point scale at St Joseph’s
As we approach report time, we want to support families in understanding the five-point scale used in student reports. This scale reflects each child’s progress against the Victorian Curriculum Achievement Standards, which describe what students are expected to learn by the end of each year level or two-year band. Our goal is to provide clear, meaningful information about your child’s learning, celebrating growth.
What the 5-Point Scale Means
1 – Not Yet Evident The student is beginning to explore this area of learning but is not yet demonstrating understanding. Students require significant support and are still developing foundational skills.
2 – Emerging (Approaching the Expected Standard) The student is learning to apply new skills and concepts with support. Students are beginning to build understanding and show early signs of progress.
3 – At Standard (At the Expected Level) The student consistently and accurately demonstrates the expected skills in familiar situations. This is the level most students will be achieving.
4 – Above Standard (Proficient) The student independently and accurately applies their learning to new or more complex situations. Students show flexible thinking, deeper understanding, and confidence when challenged.
5 – Extending (Approaching the Next Standard) The student demonstrates mastery of the standard and is ready for further extension. Students apply skills in unfamiliar contexts and show advanced, exemplary understanding.
Every child learns at their own pace, and movement along the scale is expected across the year as learning becomes more embedded.
Have a great week!
Kind regards
Megan Barber
