Classroom Spotlight

Foundation News

Term 4 has been jam-packed with learning and fun! Foundation classrooms have been particularly settled, with students eager to engage in learning and collaborate with their peers. This week, we wrap up our learning about ‘The Five Senses’. Students have explored how our senses help us to keep safe and to experience our world. They were particularly intrigued about the parts of the body that send messages to our brain such as nerves, smell receptors and ear drums.

Students read a very humorous book called ‘Odd Jobs’! It contained lots of words with the short ‘oo’ sound such as book, cook and look. This week, we are looking at the other sounds that /oo/ can make, such as in food and pool

We have noticed students' confidence and fluency with letter names has increased significantly! Keep looking for letters of the alphabet all around us and seeing if students can say the letter name and sound.

Did you know that ‘teen’ means one ten? This week students are making, writing and ordering teen numbers. They are describing these numbers as their tens and ones. For example, 14 is one ten and 4 ones. This is helping students with their place value and counting skills.

The We Thinkers curriculum is helping Foundation students to explore different problems they face at school and home. They are identifying and discussing these problems, and the possible reactions. This has also helped to prompt discussions around help seeking and the importance of speaking up when you need support.
