Magis Report

Our Year 12 students received their Service Awards at the Day of Invitation yesterday. I would like to acknowledge the enormous part these students have played in the development of the Magis program. It would take too long to list all the competitions these students have been involved in, but collectively they have represented their House, their College, their state and their country in over 40 different competitions. To our Magis Class of 2025, thank you for your outstanding commitment and leadership over the past five years. May the philosophy of Magis continue to guide you on your academic journey.

Magis Camp

A select group of Years 7 to 9 Magis students departed last Friday for our annual Magis Camp. This camp is specifically designed to meet the needs of our Gifted and Talented students within a fun and supportive environment. The program provides our students with an opportunity to extend and enrich their learning further and let their creative talents flourish.

Following afternoon tea in the Library courtyard, Ms Redfern gave an astronomy lecture in the library covering the constellations and our Indigenous astronomical traditions. In vertical (mixed year) groups, students competed to re-create the constellations Scorpius and Sagittarius using marshmallows and toothpicks. Educative and delicious!

Students then travelled to the Point Walter Recreation Centre, where Year 12 Magis leaders Jennifer Ong (2025 Magis Captain) and Amelia Watts hosted an exciting quiz night, followed by a talent show. Jennifer also delivered the camp’s keynote address, sharing highlights of her time in Magis over the past five years and providing an insight into what she hopes to pursue at university next year.

Mr Mazur led the evening’s astronomy session, where students got to view Saturn, and its largest moon, Titan, as well as Neptune (‘the blue planet’).

We had some early risers who took part in a pre-breakfast walk along the Swan River. Our final session was led by the Director of Creative Edge Thinking, Ms Kathy Boyatzis. In this session, students worked together in teams on a series of impromptu challenges designed to develop both critical and creative thinking skills. Students were encouraged to experiment with original ways to communicate their challenge solution to an audience, and we commend all students on their stellar performances.

The Magis Camp wouldn’t be possible without the wonderful support of our amazing teachers. Special thanks to Ms Cinini, Mr O’Hara, Ms Redfern and Mr Mazur for helping make this a memorable experience for all – and thank you also to our Year 12 students Jennifer and Amelia for finding time in their busy schedules.

Save the date

Our annual Magis Awards Breakfast will be held next Thursday 30 October (Week 13) at 7:30am in the Thomas More Exhibition Centre. This provides us with a wonderful opportunity to recognise our Magis graduating Class of 2025, as well as celebrate the success of our students across the Magis Elective Course and within Magis Co-Curricular.

Ethics Olympiad Case Writing Competition

Ethics Olympiad are holding a case writing competition with prize money to be won. Submissions should follow the general format for Ethics Olympiad cases: a scenario, between 400 and 800 words long, which highlights a clear moral issue and is appropriate for middle or high-school students and is written in a way that encourages civil discourse. The scenario should be framed so that the central issue is clearly moral and not simply or primarily legal or professional. Knowledge of the structure of the Ethics Olympiad competition is important, and it is for that reason that we would recommend the case writing competition to students who have previously participated in an Ethics Olympiad.

Entries due by 23 April 2026, view Ethics Olympiad website (Case Competition - EthicsOlympiad) for further details.
