Fremantle Traffic Bridge closure:

Keeping our community moving

Parents and carers are advised that the Fremantle Traffic Bridge will be closed from February 2026 for approximately 12 months to allow construction of a new, improved bridge with wider active transport paths and safer connections. This closure is expected to significantly impact traffic flow, especially along Stirling Highway, which is a key route for many in our College community.

To help manage congestion and keep traffic moving during this time, the Western Australian Government is implementing a range of initiatives starting with the new school year in 2026. These include additional peak-time train and bus services, new school bus specials, free parking at Fremantle Station for public transport users, and real-time traffic management technology along Stirling Highway.

Families are encouraged to plan ahead and consider alternative travel options such as using public transport, carpooling, or active transport to reduce the number of vehicles on the road during peak hours.

More information about these changes and how they may affect your daily travel will be shared as details become available. Your cooperation and understanding are appreciated as the community adjusts to these temporary but necessary changes.

Key facts and support measures

  • Approximately 24,000 vehicles daily that currently use the Fremantle Traffic Bridge will need to find alternative routes during the closure, starting February 2026, which may increase traffic on nearby Stirling Bridge.

  • To keep traffic moving on Stirling Highway, several initiatives will begin at the start of the 2026 school year:
    • Additional train and bus services during peak times, including two extra Fremantle trains in both morning and afternoon peaks, plus more buses on routes 107, 998, and 999.
    • New school bus specials targeting schools near Stirling Highway to reduce car travel.
    • A free transit zone on South Terrace between Douro Road and Fremantle Station for SmartRider users.
    • Expansion of Fremantle Station parking with around 100 new free bays for public transport users.
    • Deployment of real-time traffic management tech, including cameras, Bluetooth devices, and Variable Message Signs.
    • Permanent incident response teamsare  located along Stirling Highway to quickly handle traffic issues.
    • Ongoing road modifications and infrastructure upgrades to support traffic flow during the bridge closure.

Families are encouraged to plan ahead and consider using these enhanced public transport options to ease congestion and support safer, more efficient travel during this period.
