End of Year Mathematics Assessments
As we approach the end of the school year, our students are currently undertaking their end-of-year Mathematics assessments. These assessments provide valuable insights into each student’s mathematical understanding, growth and areas for further development.
Our Foundation students will complete the Mathematics Online Interview (MOI), focusing on key concepts in Counting and Place Value. The MOI is an online assessment tool for students in the early years used by teachers to gauge mathematical understanding through a one-on-one interview. It assesses knowledge in the mathematical areas by using 'growth points' or 'stepping stones' to track student progress. The results provide teachers with diagnostic information to help them plan targeted instruction and responsive teaching. This assessment allows teachers to gain a deeper understanding of how our youngest learners think about numbers and develop early numeracy skills.
Students in Years 1 to 6 will participate in the Progressive Achievement Test (PAT) Mathematics assessment. PAT Maths is a standardised test designed to measure a student’s mathematical ability and understanding across a wide range of skills and proficiencies. It assesses how students apply their mathematical knowledge to solve problems, interpret data, reason mathematically and demonstrate fluency in routine calculations.
Core proficiencies and skills assessed:
- Understanding: How well a student understands mathematical concepts
- Fluency: The ability to perform calculations and procedures accurately and efficiently
- Problem-solving: The ability to use mathematical knowledge to solve problems
Reasoning: The ability to logically justify solutions and support or refute claims
Content areas assessed:
- Whole number operations
- Fractions and decimals
- Money and financial maths
- Patterns and algebra
- Measurement
- Geometry
- Statistics
Probability
Purpose of the assessment:
- To provide a snapshot of a student's mathematical skills and knowledge at a specific time
- To help educators identify student strengths and areas needing improvement
To inform teaching and learning practices and monitor student progress over time
These assessments not only help track student progress but also support teachers in planning future learning experiences that build upon each student’s current level of understanding.
