Learning Centre News...

Learning Centre One

How have we almost come to the end of the Term? We can’t believe how fast this term has flown by! It has been great seeing the preps begin to show their resilience and determination with all the work that they do. They have really been showing a ‘can do’ attitude when it comes to their learning.

In English, the students have been learning diagraph (two letters making 1 sound) sounds ff, ll and ss. Students then revised their phase two sounds for extra exposure. The students then explored a range of texts and their purpose, and continued to look over concepts about print. The students then looked at how they can make a text to self connection and that they use their pointer while reading. During writing students begun to learn how they can write a sentence, create their own piece of writing using images and share it with their peers.

During Maths, the students have been learning how to count forwards and backwards 0-10 and 10 - 0. Students used a range of strategies such as a 10’s frame, using manipulatives and exploring how they can say, make and write a number. The students made quantities and were able to subitise a number they rolled.

Throughout Religion, the students begun learning about the Easter story and that Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy week and that the Last Supper is an important story about Jesus with his disciples. The students created their own Easter crosses and sequenced the Easter story.

SUMMER GALA SPORTS

Today the senior students represented our school at the Summer Gala sports day. We travelled by bus to a few different venues and took part in five different sporting competitions. The students have been training each week this term, in the lead-up to the gala day, preparing to compete against other local primary schools in Melbourne's west. Our 5/6s interacted politely with all, showed a growth mindset throughout the day and represented our school with pride.

INQUIRY

As we near the end of our Civics and Citizenship Inquiry unit, the students have been learning about the three levels of the Australian government. They have been working on a triorama depicting each level's different roles.

PREP BUDDIES

This week, the Year 5s and their Prep buddies spent some time playing snakes and ladders together. They worked on using their cooperative skills, following rules to play fairly and encouraging each other to play for fun. It was wonderful to see their smiling faces as they enjoyed another afternoon getting to know each other a little better.

Learning Centre Four

Greetings from everyone in Learning Centre 4. It has been another busy week with NAPLAN, First Reconciliation, and 3/4 Cross Country.

NAPLAN

Congratulations to all our grade 3 students for completing their first series of NAPLAN testing. Students worked diligently over these past 2 weeks to complete tests in Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language, and Numeracy. It was wonderful to see our students putting in the best efforts and managing the challenges of NAPLAN.

3/4 Cross Country

On Wednesday our grade 3/4 students participated in an exciting cross country event. Students had to run 2 kilometres. It was great to see all students participating and having a good time, even though it was really, really hard.

Literacy

In literacy we have been focusing on persuasive texts. Students have been able to discuss and record reasons for having different pets and attempted to support their reasons with evidence and persuasive techniques.

Harmony Week

As part of our literacy work in Learning Centre 4 this week we have been celebrating Harmony Week. Students have been able to learn about some of the many cultures that make up our world. We have read some interesting books and students have shared about their own names, languages and cultural customs.

Numeracy

In numeracy we have been learning about 2 Dimensional shapes and 3 Dimensional objects. Our students have investigated the difference between 2 and 3 Dimensions, the properties of shapes, and composite shapes. Students have also enjoyed investigating shapes in the environment, making representations of 2D shapes and 3D objects and defining shapes by noticing their properties.

Inquiry

During our inquiry lessons we have been learning about local government and the services they provide. Students have been lucky enough to enjoy a presentation by Iramoo Ward Councillor Peter Maynard. He spoke to us all about his time as councillor and some of the many responsibilities of local councils. Students have had a chance to share their learning through a variety of activities including making presentations about a chosen service provided by the Wyndham City Council.

Religion

As part of their Religious Education, students have been learning about the Sacraments, with a focus on Reconciliation. Students have deepened their understanding of the process and purpose of Reconciliation in preparation for many of our grade 3s to complete their First Reconciliation.

Reconciliation

We had a wonderful night celebrating the First Reconciliation of a number of our students. Well done to those students and families that have continued their journey in the Catholic faith.

Wellbeing

For our wellbeing lessons students have been continuing to learn about our core school values. We have also been continuing to look at a growth mindset and how positive attitudes towards mistakes and challenges can help us to become better learners.

Finally, a very safe and happy Easter and school holidays to all our 3/4 students and families!
