The Learning Zone

Year Three students and teachers welcomed Mr Morley into their classroom during History lessons on Monday 8th April. Year Three students have been learning about the importance of country and place to the people who belong to a local area.

Students have been exploring the First Australians who lived in our local area; the Gamilaraay People. Mr Morley showed the students a variety of artifacts that Aboriginal people used in their culture. He spoke about a shield, coolamon, bullroarer, boomerang and spear. He also explained how each artifact was used and the importance of it in Aboriginal culture.

Year Three particularly enjoyed learning the history of a bullroarer and watching Mr Morley demonstrate how one was used to ward off evil spirits and to communicate to other tribes. The bullroarer consists of a piece of wood attached to a string, which when swung in a large circle produces a roaring vibration sound.

Year Three will be looking forward to continuing their learning in History lessons about the importance of country and place to people.
