Athletics Incursion

Rooms 1-10 were lucky enough to participate in a special Athletics clinic through the Sporting Schools Grant on Tuesdays. Room 11 were able to do the same activities with me on their PE day.

Tony from Athletics Australia brought a lot of special equipment to captivate their interest in learning a wide range of activities. The first week he even brought a selection of different footwear and explained when they were used and made references to top athletes like Cathy Freeman and Usain Bolt and why they required unique footwear for different events.

Over the 3 weeks they participated in a variety of activities, were taught how to hold the equipment, how equipment is modified throughout the ages and how to correctly use the equipment. Many of these we do not have at Marion. A particular favourite of all classes was the "splatter balls". These are shotputs that can be used inside and were all of different weights for different ages. At Marion we use the 2kg splatter ball shotputs. As the students move up towards high school and beyond into adulthood, the weights go up considerably up to 7kg. Some lucky students were able to hold these, but not use them.

  • Week 3 the students participated in javelin (using a plastic one for years 3-6, and vortex for R-2), sprints and long jump.
  • Week 4 was high jump, hurdles team relay and shotput.
  • Week 5 was discus (a foam one to learn the correct technique), triple jump and sprints.

The sessions were enjoyed by all and students showed our school values with pride. They enthusiastically participated and improved on their events with multiple attempts to practice. It was a wonderful lead into preparing for Sports Day.
