Spotlight on Learning - Room 6
This term, in middle primary, we have been exploring different texts including ‘Rascal: One Brave Dog’s Journey Home and Lost in the Caves’ to assist in our narrative focus. Students have started to explore narrative structure, looking at what makes up an orientation, complication, climax and resolution. Students have looked at how they can create more interesting stories by using adjectives and noun groups to explain different parts of the text.
We have explored the structure of different chapters from Rascal to help us look at narrative structure. Both individually and as a class, we have plotted the story of Rascal and his adventures in the first book, leading to us to predict what will happen in the sequel, ‘Rascal: Trapped in the Tracks’.
To assist students in writing more in-depth sentences, we have used still image prompts from ‘the Lion King’ and ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. Students were asked to describe what they saw in an image, starting with a simple sentence (The lions roared.) and expanding it into a series of complex sentences with noun groups and adjectives. Students attempted the task again for the sentence Charlie found the ticket to consolidate their understanding of how to improve their storytelling skills. Room 6 and 7 are focusing on becoming better storytellers by understanding how good writers use descriptive skills to add depth and detail to their writing.
Here are some examples of the fantastic sentences and paragraphs students in Room 6 have written using the still image prompts.
