Mrs Mellissa Bell

Earlier this week I spent some time reflecting on how this year has started. We have seen many changes, some small, some large and some very significant. A new principal, new structures for our Pastoral system, moving to vertical houses, new staff and new buildings are just a few of the changes we have seen. And though for many change is a hard thing to manage and accept, I feel as though we have had such a strong and positive start to 2024.

Last week we celebrated Harmony Day. In the past we have always acknowledged the day during morning prayer or as part of our school assembly, but this year we celebrated the different cultures of those around us. Our students got engaged in a variety of activities in the afternoon and we all came together for a BBQ lunch. The atmosphere was one of positivity and fun. It was great to receive a text later that evening from a parent and former staff member who was able to come and join us saying that it was a great afternoon and what a joy to see so many smiles and hear so much laughter about the school.

We have worked hard to foster a real sense of community and belonging, to both the College and to our House system. Our student leadership team has kept this at the forefront of their work each and every day, creating small and large opportunities to bring house spirit alive. This has been very evident during lent here at school. Each house has taken a week to raise money. We have had easter egg raffles, guess the number of lollies and lolly scrambles and next week we have the chance to throw wet sponges at Mr Gibney. Each day there is something happening for students to get engaged in. There is a real sense of community and joy here at O’Connor.

The term has been busy, there is no doubt and we are all very keen for a break. I have included here a prayer I shared at our staff meeting this week. I wish you all a safe and peaceful Easter break, and I look forward to the next fortnight, one filled with lots of opportunities for our students to get engaged and shine.
