While the ATAR is still the main selection tool used by most unis, there are other ways for you to show that you’re ready to succeed at tertiary study.
Many institutions have one or more early offer schemes for Year 12 students. Through these schemes, the institutions will assess you using criteria other than (or in addition to) your ATAR. Always check the institution websites to make sure the courses you are applying for are covered by the schemes. Look at this guide for the 2024-25 Early Entry Schemes for NSW Universities
On the 11th of April, The University of Sydney is running an information session tailored to help year 10 students and their parents navigate through the selection of their year 11 and 12 subjects. Tune in to hear from current staff and students of the university as well as a UAC representative to hear about the impact of subject selection on adjustment factors, what the ATAR is and how it is calculated, prerequisites and assumed knowledge and tips for admission and scholarships.
Many students in year 10 have expressed an interest in completing a week of work experience in an industry they want to pursue after leaving school. Year 10 work experience is student driven and not a compulsory event.
To begin the process, students must complete the My Work Experience modules and email the certificate to Mrs Galvin and collect the relevant forms. The modules can be found on the Year 10 Careers Google Classroom. It is then the students responsibility with the support of family members to seek an employer who is willing to take them on for a week of work experience.
In order for Work Experience to be approved, students must have submitted the required paperwork and have no outstanding class work or assessments. Please contact me if you have questions about this process.
