Chinese New Year Celebration

On Friday, 20 February, our school community came together to celebrate Chinese New Year with a vibrant and joyful Chinese Cultural Day. Students and staff embraced the occasion by dressing in traditional Chinese attire or wearing red, a colour symbolising good fortune and happiness. It was wonderful to see the whole school involved, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the day. Students participated in a range of engaging cultural activities, learning to play a traditional Chinese checker game, practicing calligraphy by writing the characters “福” (blessing, good fortune), “和” (harmony) and ”春” (Spring), exploring the art of papercutting, and enjoying colouring and decorating cherry blossom artworks.

Students also listened to traditional stories and had the opportunity to play with traditional Chinese fans, learning how they are used in cultural performances and celebrations. These activities provided meaningful opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of Chinese traditions while learning about the values and stories behind them. Most importantly, the celebration helped foster respect for different cultures and an appreciation of the rich diversity within our school community. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this event such a success. It was a wonderful way to celebrate, learn and connect together.

This term, the students have been loving focusing on Drama, using their imaginations, bodies and team work to create freeze frames and mimes of real life scenarios and different stories. The Preps learned to play “Mirror Me”, copying their partners actions and faces as they created a reflection.  They learned how to change their bodies and hold it in position to create a freeze frame of various real life scenarios, such as walking a dog and playing basketball.

Our Year 5/6 students have been practicing their drama skills through role play and freeze frames. They are very talented and very creative.
