Assistant Principals Update

It was fantastic to see such a strong turnout at our Open Day on Saturday. The school was buzzing with energy as families explored our campus, met staff and students, and experienced the vibrant community that makes Fitzroy High School such a special place to learn.

A huge thank you to our wonderful panel of Year 7 students who spoke to more than 150 prospective enrolments. They represented the school with confidence and authenticity, sharing their positive experiences and giving families a genuine insight into life at Fitzroy High.

Our Year 7 cohort has worked exceptionally hard this term. From attending camp and participating in advisory activities to making new friends and completing NAPLAN, it has been a big and exciting start to the year. We are very proud of the way they have embraced the opportunities and challenges of secondary school.

Our Year 8 students have also made a strong start, settling into the year with a focus on routines, organisation and effective time management. It’s been wonderful to see them growing in confidence and independence—great work, Year 8s!

We also had a group of students involved in a fun photo shoot at the state-of-the-art Bundha Sports Facility next to Wurun, showcasing the fantastic spaces available to our students. The highlight? They even made it onto TV!

Victorian Mathematics Games Challenge

Fitzroy High School students are currently putting their problem-solving skills to the test as they participate in the Victorian Mathematics Games Challenge, a dynamic online competition designed for high-achieving students in Years 5–10.

The challenge features six modules released across the program, with teams of two to four students working collaboratively at their own pace. Each module takes approximately 90 to 120 minutes to complete and is designed to both challenge and extend students while deepening their understanding of key mathematical concepts.

Through a mix of games, puzzles, and rich problem-solving tasks, students are developing essential skills such as reasoning, creativity, and fluency. The competition encourages participants to think and work like mathematicians, tackling novel problems and exploring different strategies together.

A strong emphasis is placed on collaboration and teamwork, with students sharing ideas and approaches as they progress. Automated scoring provides immediate feedback, while leaderboards and rankings celebrate and showcase student achievement throughout the competition. High-performing teams and individuals also have the opportunity to earn prizes along the way.

Students who demonstrate strong achievement and consistent participation will be invited to a face-to-face Regional Showcase, where they will celebrate their learning journey and collaborate with like-minded peers on similar problem-solving tasks.

The event is providing Fitzroy High students with a valuable opportunity to extend their mathematical abilities in an engaging and competitive environment, while building confidence, curiosity, and a passion for problem-solving.

NAPLAN

Fitzroy High School students have recently participated in this year’s NAPLAN assessments.

281 tests were successfully completed over 21 sessions, reflecting the strong organisation and engagement of both students and staff throughout the process. The assessments provide valuable insights into student progress in key areas such as literacy and numeracy.

Families can expect to receive NAPLAN results in Term Three, offering a clearer picture of individual achievement and areas for growth.

In addition, Fitzroy High School has been invited to take part in a trial of new questions for the 2027 NAPLAN testing program, scheduled for Term Two. This opportunity recognises the school’s ongoing commitment to supporting educational improvement and contributing to the development of future assessment practices.

Thank you to all students for your participation and maturity, to the staff that assisted in coordinating the sessions and to our IT guru Tung, for all of the tech support.

Progress Reports and Three Way Conferences

Term One progress reports for students in Years 7–10 are now available through Compass, providing an important opportunity for families to reflect on learning, celebrate achievements, and set goals for the remainder of the semester.

These reflections will be valuable in preparation for the upcoming Year 7–12 Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences, taking place on Thursday 23 April at the Wurun Senior Campus.

Bookings are now open and will close early in week one of term two. Students are encouraged to take an active role in the discussions, using their reports and feedback to guide meaningful conversations.

Families requiring additional support to attend are encouraged to contact the school. The conferences provide a valuable opportunity to strengthen the partnership between students, families and staff in supporting each student’s learning journey.

Thank you to our students, staff and families for such a fantastic term. We hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved Easter break, and we look forward to seeing you refreshed for Term 2.

Kind regards,
