Principal's Report

Congratulations to all members of our school community for getting through a really great first term of 2026. As I was sitting down to compose this message I started to think about all of the things that have happened at the school this term, mostly behind the scenes whilst the important work of teaching and learning has been happening.
We have made serious progress on our goals for the year already and some of the work we have done includes:
- Conducted our first ever combined swimming carnival with Collingwood College
- Made a focus on High Expectations for students and staff
- Increased collaboration with Collingwood College through our shared professional learning program, staff across both schools and all three campuses have participated in 6 shared professional learning experiences, developing our teaching expertise and bringing into alignment our teaching practices.
- Introduced our Learning Enhancement Program for students on Monday afternoons.
- Created a new Literacy support program which will begin in Term 2 alongside our English and Maths Extension programs for gifted students.
- Embedded our new mantra, Work Hard, Get Smart, Be Kind across the school including our positive school behaviour chronicle posts
- Revamped our Progress reports to align with our new Mantra
- Introduced Learning Portfolios from Year 7 -10 based around the New Metrics Competencies, Community, Cognition, Communication, Creativity and Commitment
- Implemented a new Year 8 elective structure to provide some agency for Year 8 students in their learning.
- Implemented the new PE structure at Year 10 to increase participation and options for our female students.
- Organised 3 community events (Working Bee, Gardening and the Market) to strengthen ties to the community and increase engagement.
- Employed a community liaison officer to work with our students of African heritage to increase our connection to our community.
- Engaged with events at our local primary schools to raise the profile of the school
- Hosted our federal member of parliament Peter Khalil for a Q&A session with our student leaders.
- Increased the visibility of contemporary work produced by our students.
All of this has taken place whilst the regular everyday running of a school with classes and curriculum and assessment has been taking place as well. There is still much to be done but it has been a very busy and productive start to the year and I would like to thank all the members of our community who have contributed to our efforts to make Fitzroy High School the great school it deserves to be.
I wish everyone a safe and restful break and look forward to another busy and productive term in Term 2.
