The World Cup and the Kingdom of God

As a football fan, I have many fond memories of the World Cup. Ever since Australia defeated Uruguay in 2005 to qualify for the World Cup, I have been captivated by the beautiful game. I've followed the Socceroos whenever they have played in Adelaide and even travelled to see them lift the Asian Cup in 2015.

Every World Cup brings unforgettable moments on the pitch, but what strikes me most is what happens off it. Group chats come alive again. Friends and families gather around televisions at strange hours. Conversations begin with strangers who support different teams but share the same passion for the game.

This tournament has reminded me that football has a unique ability to bring people together. Supporters from different nations fill the same streets, share meals, exchange stories and celebrate together. One example came when a newspaper in Boston wrote an open letter thanking Scottish supporters, saying that the Tartan Army had brought "laughter, bagpipes, and memories" that would be talked about for years.

These moments provide a glimpse of something even greater. The Bible paints a picture of God's kingdom as a gathering of people from every nation, tribe, people and language worshipping together before His throne (Revelation 7:9). While the World Cup is temporary and our national loyalties remain, it reminds us of a deeper truth. God created us for a relationship with one another and with Him.

In a world often divided by politics, culture and conflict, it is refreshing to see people united by a shared joy. As Christians, we are called to be people who build bridges rather than walls, who welcome strangers and who celebrate the dignity and value of every person because they are made in God's image.

The World Cup will eventually end. The trophies will be lifted, the stadiums will empty and the conversations will move on. But the unity found in Christ is eternal. Through Jesus, people from every corner of the globe are invited into one family, one kingdom and one hope.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the joy that sport can bring and for the way it connects people from different nations and cultures. As we enjoy the World Cup, help us to see reflections of Your greater kingdom, where people from every tribe and language are united in worship of You.

Teach us to be welcoming, gracious and compassionate towards others. May we be peacemakers who bring people together and point them to the unity that can only be found in Christ.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
