A Celebration in Year 4
In Year 4, we earn Dojo points for following the St Mary’s Norms sound easy?
We earn points for doing classroom jobs, cleaning up without being asked and even tidying the sandpit when we haven't played in it! We also earn them for walking responsibly in the corridor, getting to the floor quickly for a front-row spot, or adding words to our Focus phoneme list when Mrs Mason is feeling generous.
After suggesting various rewards, we set a class goal of 300 points. Back in February, that felt like a lot, but drum roll, please we did it!
Choosing between cooking or extra play at Alma Park, our class democracy voted for cooking. Mrs Mason brought in her favorite cupcake recipe and enough ingredients for everyone to make three cakes each.
We worked collaboratively, with everyone assigned a job. We carefully measured flour, cracked eggs into a separate bowl to avoid adding shells to our mixture and took turns stirring with the wooden spoon until the batter was silky. It was tricky spooning the mixture into colorful patty pans without dripping batter on the tray, but we managed! Finally, we topped our cakes with delicious choc chips.
While the cakes baked to a golden brown, we wrote out the recipe to take home. The kitchen smelled amazing! Most of us couldn’t resist eating one of our cupcakes hot out of the oven…yummo! Once cooled, we expertly spread chocolate icing and added colorful sprinkles. The finished treats ended up in our bags and our tummies some were shared with families and some were just too good to give away!
Visual Arts - Prep
In Visual Arts Prep B artists have been learning to use line and colour to create expressive flower artworks. They carefully painted each petal, used lines to show detail in the flowers and chose colours to express feelings. Every flower artwork is unique, special and full of bright and amazing colours.
Netball Lighting Premiership - Written by Lucy
On Thursday, 11th June, the years 5 & 6 Netball players went to Ashwood Netball Courts to join Netball Lightning Premiership. It was exciting to play against students from other schools and to make new friends and see people we already knew.
To get there, we travelled on a large bus with our teammates. When we arrived, we saw so many schools gathering at the courts.
Our school had two teams competing: Team A and Team B. Before the competition began, we sat together on a bench and talked with our teammates. Everyone was excited and a little nervous for the games.
Team A got in to the Semi Final playing against OLOL, but sadly we lost 10 - 3.
Team B, also had a great day, but sadly did not get into the Semi Finals.
Over all everyone for all the school did an amazing job.
Football Lighting Premiership - Written by Sam & Orion
Last Friday the school footy team participated in the Interschool Football Lightning Premiership AFL 9s. We played against five different footy teams in our pool. There were eight teams in total in the competition. Our first game was a bye so our coach Mr B took the opportunity to run us through some practice skills and warm up drills. We were ready for our first game against St Columbas. They were a tough competition. Our defenders restricted their goals and we scored a few ourselves. Our next three games saw us scoring enough to earn a spot in the quarter finals. It was a very windy day and every kick was a challenge because it was unknown if the ball would go in the direction you kicked it. We enjoyed playing by the new AFL 9’s rules and everyone had a fair go. Thanks to Mr B, Miss Romios and Miss Kat for coaching and cheering from the sidelines. It was good to catch up with our Holt District friends and spend a day running around staying fit and healthy.
Library News
We have had a great Term in the library. Boosted of course by the excitement of 'read more in May' that has definitely transferred over to 'Joyful reading in June!' See what I did there?? I do love seeing the students reading outside or inside!
Last week is our last week of Term, I'm encouraging students to take home a chapter book for those rainy days that may creep in. I'm even taking a few of the senior books home for a read! Please do not hesitate to reach out if you're after a shared reading recommendation like Roald Dahl and David Walliams. I've recently introduced the comedian David Baddiell into the mix. His book Parent Agency will be made into a movie. If there are any library books laying around at home, it would be great to see them back next week in library bags.
Thanks & Happy Reading! Miss Kat
