This Fortnight in Gardening

Winter certainly made its presence felt this week, with a mix of weather and several rainy days that kept us indoors.

However, this gave our Foundation and Grade 1 students a wonderful opportunity to closely observe their seed experiments. We were excited to discover that both the bean and wheat seeds in our germination bags had sprouted! The seeds had grown roots, stalks and leaves, giving students a fascinating glimpse into what happens beneath the soil when a seed begins to grow. We also followed a step-by-step tutorial on how to draw a sprouting seed, and the students created some fantastic artwork.

Our Grade 5 students spent time caring for their outdoor learning space by completing some important garden maintenance. They mulched, swept and raked the area, helping to keep it looking neat and beautiful.

A special thank you goes to Claire Stronge for generously donating a tree to the garden. We look forward to watching it grow in the years to come.

This week we also enjoyed a very special gardening milestone. Using dried corn on the cob grown by last year’s Grade 5 students, we made our very own popcorn! It was amazing for students to see the full journey from seed to harvest and finally to a delicious snack. What a wonderful way to celebrate the rewards of gardening and learning where our food comes from.
