Green Team News
It was a beautiful sunny winter’s day when the Green Team met for another productive gardening session. The students arrived eager and enthusiastic to learn about the tasks planned for the afternoon.
After inspecting the garden beds, the students noticed that some of the carrot, purple cauliflower and broccoli seedlings planted in May had been nibbled by animals or gastropods (soft-bodied invertebrates such as slugs and snails). They enthusiastically discussed possible ways to protect the plants from these pests in the future.
The students were delighted to see how well the seedlings they had grown from seed in compostable pots six weeks ago had developed. These included Brussels sprouts, carrots and snow peas, all of which had grown vigorously and were ready for planting.
The session began with a demonstration on how to successfully transplant seedlings into the garden. The students then had the opportunity to plant the seedlings themselves, carefully placing them into the prepared garden beds. Once all the seedlings were planted, the students thoroughly watered them to help them settle into their new environment.
It was a productive and enjoyable afternoon and the students are excited to watch their plants grow and look forward to harvesting the produce next term.
