Music Matters

After an amazing term filled with many exciting events, including concerts, rehearsals, workshops and eisteddfods, we are still busy rehearsing for future performances next term and beyond. Please encourage your son to practice regularly during the holidays!

Our Elective Music students on excursion to see the Sydney Symphony Orchestra perform John William’s film music at the Opera House last week.

Woodwind teacher changes: Mr Jonathan Dollin will be leaving at the end of this term to seek work closer to home. We thank Mr Dollin for his time and the opportunities he has given his students. We are very excited to announce that Mr Tony Wheeler will be taking over Mr Dollin’s students. Mr Wheeler is a highly experienced teacher and accomplished musician who currently also teaches at Saint Ignatius’ College, Riverview and Roseville College. Mr Wheeler will be in touch with the relevant families during the holidays to organise lessons for next term and to make the transition as seamless as possible.

Intermediate Concert Band workshop – A very big thank you to Ms Laura Power who headed an entourage of specialist tutors to work with our Intermediate Concert Band in their preparation for the Interstate Band Championships next term. This is a valuable opportunity for our young musicians to hone their skills. Our PAPA parents and helpers were wonderful as always in supporting the boys and staff by providing a BBQ lunch.

Drama Matters

HSC Drama

On Monday students in the HSC Drama Elective performed their Individual Project Trial in the Sarto Centre after school. This was an opportunity for each student to receive detailed feedback on their performance which will help develop their performance for the final examinations in August.

We were lucky to have the Head of Drama from Cranbrook mark with Ms Lindley at this time. Students each performed a 6–8-minute monologue of their choice theses were from the following plays: Accidental Death of an Anarchist, The Producers, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead, How to Disappear Completely and Never be Found and Decadence.

Stolen at The Wharf Theatre

On Tuesday 25 June the Drama Elective Groups in Year 11 & 12 went to Sydney Theatre Company at the Wharf to watch Jane Harrison’s seminal play, Stolen about the Stolen Generations. (This event has been kindly paid for by PAPA). This ground-breaking play has been performed internationally and across Australia and has been on the NESA Drama list for many years.

Upcoming Drama Events:

  • Sunday 28 July: The annual HSC Drama Trial Showcase at 1:00 pm. Students will perform their Individual and Group Projects to an invited audience of friends, family and the school community. External markers will also be there to mark and give relevant feedback to all students so they can prepare for their final HSC Practical Examinations in August.
  • Wednesday 31 July Drama Elective Groups 10, 11 & 12 will go to Sydney Theatre Company to watch the final multi-media gothic trilogy, Dracula directed by Kit Williams. (This event has been kindly paid for by PAPA.)
