Head Start Program

During Week 9, five students from Uralla Central travelled to Armidale for four days to participate in the Head Start Pre-Apprenticeship and Traineeship Program in Trade Foundations with Yalagan Group Training Organisation (GTO). This program was provided by the Department of Education’s Educational Pathways Program (nsw.gov.au) (EPP). Students gained accreditation in the units of competency listed below which will earn credit for any future study in this training package. Participants who are over 16 years of age will also be issued with their EWP Operator Licence Yellow Card. EPP will now work with the school and the GTO to ensure interested students have their White Card and can participate in work experience in this field.

Year 9 Mathematics Recording for NSW DoE

On Wednesday 26 June, Mrs Hobbs’ Year 9 Mathematics class participated in recording their mathematics lesson as part of the NSW Mathematics program for the New Mathematics syllabus.  A recording team came from Sydney to Uralla Central School to record the class. The focus of the recording was Peer and Self-Assessment while the students were working on their topic ‘Linear Relationships’.  The recording group interviewed Mrs Hobbs about how the new Mathematics syllabus was being implemented at Uralla Central School and how peer and self-assessment enabled students to identify areas of strengths and areas that may need further improvement.  After the initial shock of seeing a classroom full of recording equipment and cameras set up, the class worked hard during the lesson and asked the teacher for help when needed. The recording group recorded the entire lesson for a 6-minute video. It will include the students working, with Mrs Hobbs’ voice over and with student interviews at the end.

It was a great opportunity for students from UCS to showcase their school to the State. Well done!

A Student's Account:

The film crew arrived at our school just as our Maths teacher Mrs Hobbs began explaining the concept of x=mxtc, the linear relationships between two variables. The crew set up their cameras and microphones, capturing every moment of our lesson as if it was a Hollywood production. At first we were all a bit nervous to have the cameras pointed at us while we were learning but our teacher reassured us that we should continue as we normally would. It was a surreal experience to have our everyday classroom transformed into a film set.  It was interesting to see how our teacher adapted to the presence of the cameras, making sure to engage with both students and the crew at the same time. Despite the added pressure of being recorded, we all found ourselves more focused and engaged in the lesson than usual. It was a unique opportunity to showcase our learning process and the dedication of our teacher to helping us understand complex mathematical concepts. By the end of the day we were all excited to see how the footage would turn out and to share our experience with our friends and family.
