Year 8, 10, & 12 Advisers Report

Year 8 have had a settled finish to term two. The team environment has continued to thrive throughout the term as we continue to work towards our Year 8 Key Actions:

Empathy, Teamwork, Resilience, Responsibility and Gratitude

*We have completed our key actions for 14 weeks in a row!

The term has concluded with some key events in the calendar. In week 7 we had the Henry Kendall High School Athletics Carnival, and we have seen may of our students representing our school in Regional and State Futsal Championships, Zone Swimming and Cross Country as well as Oztag Gala Days.

The Athletics Carnival saw many of our students compete in many events, all having success and earning their house very important points. It was great seeing the students enjoy the carnival and they looked great dressed up in their house colours. Congratulations to those students who achieved great success and earned the right to represent Henry Kendall high School at the Zone Athletics Carnival coming up at the end of term.

We have also seen many students represent Year 8 and the school at many extracurricular events this term. The Under 14’s Futsal girls were very successful at Niagara Park in the Regional Futsal Championships and earned the right to go to Maitland in Week 9 to compete in the State Futsal Championships. Zone Cross Country and Zone Swimming have also seen worthy recipients represent our school and the Oztag Gala Day in Week 8, had a host of students representing the Year 8 team.

As a year group, we also had our Love Bites Wellbeing day earlier this term. This was a valuable day to reinforce key year group principles such as:

  • Values and Identity,
  • Identifying Respect and Disrespect,
  • Bullying and Relationships and
  • How to seek help and support a friend.

The day finished with a session on creativity, and students were able to display a message they had learnt during the day, on a bunting to be displayed in the library.

I couldn’t be prouder of the achievements of Year 8 this term and look forward to building our team into Semester Two.

It has been a pleasure working with Year 8 in Semester One. I hope everyone has a wonderful break and they come back energised and ready to work hard in Semester Two.

Year 10 Advisers

Year 12's penultimate term at school has come to a close a fact I find hard to accept as I am not ready to bid them farewell! I am thankful for another fantastic term spent together filled with events that highlighted their wonderful personalities.

This was evident during our fundraising barbecue at the Athletics Carnival. It was a busy but successful time and the money raised will contribute to funding their formal. The team that assisted at the barbecue showed great initiative, kindness and enthusiasm. A big thank you to the students who volunteered and a special mention to Mrs. Wearne for her barbecue skills. Your efforts are truly appreciated!

The Athletics Carnival is a highlight of the year especially for the Year 12 students who are participating for the last time. The day is packed with various activities for the students to engage in. However the most awaited event is the Year 12 students versus teacher relay. Amidst multiple lead changes and enthusiastic cheers from the school, it brings us joy to declare that the teachers emerged victorious in the race. We extend our gratitude to all the staff and students for their involvement.

During the holidays it is "Jump Back July." A month where we find ways to bounce back. Nelson Mandela once said,

“Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”

Over the next term, we are going to face some setbacks and we need to learn how we bounce back from them. Below are some exercises to try over the break to start working on bouncing back.

Week 1

  • Be willing to ask for help when you need it.
  • Find something to look forward to today.
  • Get the basics right: eat well, exercise and go to bed on time.
  • Pause breathe and feel your feet firmly on the ground.
  • Shift your mood by doing something you really enjoy.

Week 2

  • Reach out to someone you trust and share your feelings with them.
  • Look for something positive in a difficult situation.
  • Write your worries down and save then for a specific ‘worry time’.
  • Challenge negative thoughts - find an alternative interpretation.
  • Get outside and move to help clear your head.

The upcoming term is expected to be busy so I encourage Year 12 to take some time to relax and recharge during the holidays to prepare for it. We have the Trial HSC Examinations and a series of celebratory activities to mark the end of school, leading up to the Graduation Ceremony on Thursday 26 September 2024.

Congratulations Year 12 on another successful term! Have a restful and enjoyable break. Stay safe and be kind to others and yourself.

Remember

“Self-belief is the secret to success.”
