Languages Faculty

As Term 2 concludes it is important to reflect on the achievements of our students in HSIE and Language. It has been a very busy period for our students, and I would like to thank our teachers – Mr Allanson, Mr Ardley, Miss Ellis, Mr Herring, Mrs Kostalas, Miss McLennan, Mrs Mitchell and Mrs Travica for making learning experiences and excursions possible.

Year 7 students are completing their studies in History in Semester One. Teachers have commended students on their approach to assessment tasks and students wrote highly informative reports on the Narrabeen Man Mystery. Excellent results were also achieved in the term test. Students will embark on their study of Geography next term, beginning with the topic of Landscapes and Landforms.

Year 8 students have completed their study of Medieval Europe and the Black Death. Students were asked to complete an extended response on the short and long term impacts of the Black Death and their History teachers were impressed with the efforts of all students. A highlight of our study of the topic was our shared Medieval Day with the Applied Learning Faculty.

Year 9 Geography students were able to put theory into practice as part of a Fieldwork Experience and this focused on our Sustainable Biomes topic. An additional shared experience was our presentation from an agronomist in the field. Jonty was able to give insight into food production and engaged students with the application of technology (drones) in agriculture.

Year 10 History students visited the Sydney Jewish Museum as part of their study of Genocide and the Holocaust. Students were able to hear from leading educators in this field, tour the museum’s exhibition space and hear the personal reflections of Holocaust survivors. This was a moving experience for students and teachers. We have been touched by the thoughtful way students reflected on this museum experience and the importance of Holocaust studies. Year 10 students also engaged in fieldwork in Terrigal/Wamberal, exploring Environmental Change and Management. It was a very productive day and we wish to commend students for their efforts and behaviour on the day.

Year 11 Ancient and Modern History students are about to complete their Historical Investigations this term. Students have been independently completing their research and their final products look outstanding. Students have developed important research skills, an ability to record and reflect on their findings via a log and develop a professional presentation to showcase their findings.

Our Year 11 Legal Studies class has been engaged in the 2024 Mock Trial Competition this semester. This is a wonderful way to introduce students to the law and to increase understanding of the basis of our judicial system in Australia. A huge thanks to all participants and Miss McLennan for coaching the team.

Year 12 Ancient and Modern History students were able to part in the HTANSW Study Day at Sydney University on Thursday 20 June 2024. This was opportunity to enhance understanding of the topics completed as part of the HSC program and hear from academics and expert teachers. Students gained so much from this experience and particularly enjoyed a sample of university life.

All Year 12 students should be preparing for Trial HSC Examinations next term. Some time in the holidays should be allocated to summary writing and revision, as well as the completion of any holiday homework provided by class teachers.

Congratulations to Henry Kendall High School students who sat the Australian History Competition and Australian Geography Competition this term. We are hoping to replicate our successes in 2023 and should receive our results early Term 3.

This is only a sample of the work, opportunities and experiences enjoyed by students this term. We wish you a safe and relaxing break.
