Who says kids don’t eat their veggies? The beauty of the kitchen garden program is that if children help to prepare their own food, they are much more likely to try new and different flavours.

This term, the students prepared and shared a delicious Roasted veggie pizza, finished off with our own Nut free basil pesto, then topped with a scattering of fresh rocket leaves.

Our year 5 and 6 students served their pizza with an Autumn mandarin salad to showcase our amazing harvest of juicy mandarins.

Our students are always fascinated by the magic of yeast and how it comes alive in warm water to create a smooth elastic dough. Pizza is always a favourite at The Patch Café!

With an array of beautiful vegetables on offer at this time of year, we carefully peeled, sliced and diced some pumpkin, zucchini, sweet potatoes, beetroots, red onions, carrots, and then tray baked them for 10 minutes dressed in rosemary and olive oil; the aroma was amazing! We used these veggies to top our pizza bases along with some mozzarella and feta cheese, then cooked them in our wood fired pizza oven.

We encourage all students to have a taste and while many of the students showed some apprehension at the sight of so many vegetables, the majority of these students would end up having second helpings. With some extra time before sharing, we talked about the importance of being mindful and showing gratitude. We are grateful to each other, as we have all contributed to preparing a delicious dish, and we are grateful for our wonderful parent helpers, who assist us in the kitchen to make it all possible!
