Year 5 News

This term, The Year 3s and 5s went to CERES for an excursion to learn about Indigenous perspectives. We went on a nature walk and learnt about edible Indigenous plants including Saltbush, Lemon Myrtle, Warrigal Greens, and River Mint. Our group leader suggested that we plant the Indigenous plants in the garden at school.

After we had our snack we moved inside to learn about and recreate the story of Tiddalik the frog. We got to dress up as eels, possums, sulfur crested cockatoos, and kangaroos which was definitely a highlight. We learnt the moral of the story which was about how important our environment is and to only take what you need and not be greedy.

For the last part of the excursion, we went to a sacred place and around us we saw beautiful indigenous rock paintings. Our leader taught us how to use ochre to paint bodies with sacred symbols. We got to do it ourselves which was pretty special.

There were a lot of different stories told by the symbols and most of the girls and all of the boys got their faces painted. The boys got 6 dots on their faces representing the land that Bundjil cares for, and the girls got hunting tracks painted on our faces.

In the end we had a lot of fun doing all of the activities. It was an excursion we’ll never forget.
