Literacy

I have completed reading assessments with most students now and I have been very pleased with everyone's progress. As students become more fluent and expressive in their reading, it becomes important to focus on comprehension of the text. We have started talking about the importance of concentrating on what is happening in the book and discussing the book after we've read. This will prepare students for the greater emphasis on comprehension in grades 1 and 2.

Continuing on with our author studies, we have been reading books by Jane Godwin and Mem Fox.

A highlight for Prep C this fortnight has been our excursion to Edendale Farm. During Writer's Workshop, we were shown how to use a planner before writing and then prepared a recount of our visit to the farm.

Numeracy

Over the past 2 weeks, we have focused on Chance. We have read books, watched videos and played games to help us build up an understanding of the vocabulary we use when talking about chance, e.g. likely, unlikely, possible, impossible, certain, etc. The children particularly enjoyed our Skittles activity. We each had a small packet of Skittles and recorded the colours we had in our packet. The children then recorded the chance of choosing a particular colour from their Skittles.

Buddies

We have an enthusiastic group of Prep students who have created a club that helps solve mysteries at ACPS. They call themselves 'Andersons Find'. The children found clues in the playground that led them to believe we could have emus in our playground. They found what looked like footprints and feathers! Grade 5/6 teacher Mrs Sharland helped our Grade 6 buddies prepare a fun activity for us where we made our own emu and then had to follow some clues to find pictures of emus around the school grounds.

We would like to say thank you for setting up such a fun activity for us.

Edendale Farm

What a fantastic day we had at the farm! The students could show everything we have been learning about at school through fun activities at Edendale. We talked about reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill and focused on recycling and composting as ways to be more sustainable. The children enjoyed creating creatures from recycled materials, getting up close with the animals on a farm tour, holding wriggly worms, learning about composting and did a rubbish relay that involved sorting items into the correct bins. Carolyn from Edendale was very impressed with how much we already knew about recycling!

Please enjoy some photos from the day.

Have a great weekend!
