Compass Award Camp
On Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th September our Year 5 to 8 compass students headed off on their Adventurous Journey to Warra Gnan Coastal Camp in Warrnambool. Students began the day with a spectacular game of capture the flag, followed by a coastal walk to Thunder Point with some crabbing and rockpool rambling as well. To finish the day our Year 5 & 6 students channeled their competitive streaks for the amazing race before heading back to school to conclude their day.
Our Year 7 & 8 students carried on into the night. Welllll into the night. With students experience fishing, trivia night, beach games, mini golf and a midday movie on their second day. A huge thank you to the incredible staff at Warra Gnan who facilitated the entire experience from start to finish including homemade slices and fresh fruit for morning tea and afternoon tea, a wonderful meal prepared by Lou the chef for dinner, and their overall professional and fun approach to hosting our 33 students. We'll be back next year for certain with plenty of new adventures awaiting our Year 5 to 7 students and any newcomers that are interested in joining the program for 2024.

Senior Girls Lochard Energy Excursion
On Monday September 4, a group of secondary girls from King’s College, Warrnambool College and Brauer College travelled to the Iona Gas Storage Facility near Port Campbell to hear about the range of career opportunities available, with a focus on gender equality, and to tour the plant. The excursion was facilitated by the Neil Porter Foundation. Special thanks to Lochard Energy for providing lunch and South West TAFE for providing transport. Here are some comments from students who attended:
The Lochard Energy excursion was very insightful and interesting. One thing I found interesting was the extremely high pressures of the gas in the pipes (over 10,000 KPa) and how one gas molecule only stays in the plant for around 3 minutes.

I found it interesting to learn that not all the jobs at the gas plant require a university degree, the employers are more interested in you having a good attitude towards work and having a willingness to learn and adapt to challenges and changes. It was also interesting to see and tour the facility.
Jorja M
The gas plant and learning about all the jobs available was fascinating.

That natural gas is odourless and the smell we associate with gas comes from an odoriser made of sulfur. You can smell the odour 10 parts per billion. It was interesting that they store natural gas in porous rock.

Our visit to the Port Campbell gas plant was genuinely really interesting - I learned a lot about things that I was curious about, and also things I hadn't even considered before. The staff were all keen to answer the many questions we asked them, and it was great to learn a bit about them and their role at Lochard Energy. During the tour it was interesting to see how all the complicated different parts of the plant work together as one system. Most importantly though lunch was enjoyable.

Year 9
City Experience
Last week the Year 9's travelled to Melbourne for their City Experience. This year we partnered with Melbourne City Mission, Blender Studios and The Big Issue. The students attended various workshops and tours which allowed them to hear and see real homeless stories first hand. The students were a delight to take away.

Christian Studies
The Year 9 Christian Studies class had a great opportunity to put love in action and taught the Possum Kinder group some AFL drills on kicking and handballing (although I am secretly sure there were some Year 9's who were being taught by the Kinder kids). They all had a great time and enjoyed each other's company and the lovely weather.

Year 10 Work Experience
Earlier this term, Year 10 students went on Work Experience. Here are some of their thoughts and a few photos:
"I enjoyed seeing all the new faces everyday. It was very full on with not a lot of breaks" - Mim
"I enjoyed getting to do site reports and getting coffee/lunch with my coworkers. I am interested in the work they do, especially the maths" - Dom
"I enjoyed working on the cars and machinery and learning new things that I'm interested in" - Joel
"I liked hanging out with people and helping them when I could, but didn't enjoy cleaning the gym" - Max
"I loved working with the kids, watching them learn and learning with them. I found it hard when the kids struggled or complained and I didn't know how to help them" - Ruth

Year 11 Psychology
This week, Year 11 Psychology tried some very unique taste experiences to test their gustatory perspectives. Chorro Mealworms, Crushed Cricket Cornchips and Tyrant Ant Boiled Lollies. As well as Miracle Berry that changed their tastebuds all to sweet. Making even the most usual 'sour' tasting fruit (lemons) taste like the sweetest lemonade!
