Prep

The Preps have enjoyed their last week of Term 3! We visited the Year 4 & 5 classrooms during the Learning & Creative Arts Showcase and loved seeing what they have been doing in class. We did some drawing and writing to create a display showing how much fun we had at swimming. We have had a great term of learning!

Year 1

The Year 1 students have completed a very active term. With Grandparents Day, Book Week, Swimming and the excitement of our everyday activities the children are commended on their ability to be flexible and adapt to new learning environments. This week the class enjoyed visiting other classrooms as part of the Learning & Creative Arts Showcase and thoroughly enjoyed participating in the many activities showcased.

This term the Year 1 class have been studying a fun unit on Fractured Fairy Tales. A Fractured Fairy Tale is a retelling of a traditional Fairy Tale where some of the story elements are changed. Here are some thoughts from a few of our Year 1 students:

I liked the story The Three Little Wolves and the Very Bad Pig. I liked when the Pig comes and tries to destroy the house.

Caprice

The very bad Pig wanted to try and destroy the three little Wolves houses. They made a flower house and he really liked the smell of it so he didn’t chase them.

Alena

I liked the story of The Mermaid because the Mermaid left the tiara for the baby and got the Stingray free. It is like Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Chloe

I liked the story After the Fall. The egg was on the wall when there were cracks because the wind was really strong and a Bird went through the egg and the Bird was really colourful. He was really a Bird egg.

Vincent

My favourite story was Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion. Little Red tricked the Lion into getting frustrated because she brushed his hair and braided it.

Jeremy

I liked how the Lion dressed up as the Aunty.

Isla

I liked it how he brushed and combed and how he made the sneaky plan to try and eat Little Red and Aunty Rose.

Year 2

Another term down! Last week, the Year 2's took their first excursion this year to the Cinema and the Breakwater. After learning about The Importance of the Past, Year 2 visited these two sites to explore their history and significance to Warrnambool.

Some highlights of the excursion included seeing the projection room (and watching part of a movie play from there), talking with the cinema's longest serving employee of 50 years, Ivan, and seeing the original stage. Students also learnt all about the Breakwater and how it has changed over time and how it was used many years ago.

This week, we have been focusing on Persuasive Writing. After reading a book called Chairs on Strike, something odd happened in Year 2... Students returned to class to find that their chairs had decided to go on strike. The chairs left a note explaining their decision, so it was up to the Year 2's to put their persuasive writing skills into action and persuade the chairs to come back. Thankfully, the chairs received the Year 2's letters and decided to come back!

Throughout this term, Year 2 have been lucky enough to have Grace from Year 5 helping us out with Maths. This week was Grace's last lesson with us. Yesterday, Grace took charge of the lesson and played some wonderful Maths games and activities with the Year 2's. Thank you, Grace, for your hard work and amazing help! The Year 2's will certainly miss having you in Maths.

Thank you to all of the incredible help Year 2 has received throughout the term from our parents/carers. Praying for restful and enjoyable holidays and looking forward to Term 4!

Year 3

We have had some special visitors in Year 3 this week. Bella's speech therapist, Bethany, came and helped her to offer encouragement cards to the class. The Year 6 students also visited the class to learn about our Pintupi People project. Plus, family and friends gathered for the Learning & Creative Arts Showcase to hear about God's love for these traditional desert dwellers.

On Thursday, the Year 3 students rocked up to school with yellow nail polish, hair ribbons, socks, bracelets, patka, stickers, you name it - all for RUOK? Day. In the classroom we had a scavenger hunt for the qualities of a good friend. We asked each other questions like, "what makes you a helpful person" and "how are you loyal?". Then we wrote a good friend acrostic poem together. Please enjoy reading the result below!

Year 4

Year 4 had green thumbs this week after assisting Mr. McNaughton with planting trees and plants in the new outdoor learning space. Thank you Mr. McNaughton for creating an inviting place for us to learn and play outside. Also, over the past three weeks, Year 4 had the opportunity to experience field hockey at the Warrnambool Hockey Club. It was great to experience gameplay and learn new skills on a full size field.

Year 5

We have been working hard in our Science lessons on light. The Year 5's have loved the privilege of going into the Senior lab and experimenting with the light boxes to learn all about light. A big thank you to Mrs. Shergold for helping us out.

Year 6

Year 6 had a lot of fun creating Natural Disasters at the Learning Showcase on Wednesday afternoon. We had volcanoes erupting and lava burning through towns, cyclones picking up debris, tsunami waves ebbing and flowing, avalanches wiping out landscapes and earthquakes wrecking buildings. The Year 6 students really enjoyed showing parents and other classes how the experiments worked and how they related to the real natural disasters.

Junior School Art

What a gift it was at the end of Term 3 to be able to come together with our friends and family and share a warm night of interactive fun, food and music alongside the chance to show and view just a snippet of the artworks and art styles which the students have been busy learning about, honing their skills in and then labouring to create throughout the year.

As a teacher, I believe that the Creative Arts is another area which has been given by our Creator God to enable us to further worship, express and reflect outwardly an appreciation and witness of His creation. After all, isn’t God the greatest artist, whereby even after creating the whole world with all its trimmings, he still never ceases to paint a whole new sunrise and sunset each day!

“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse (to believe in God the Creator)”

Romans 1:20

However, as I said previously, the Arts is just another area (a fun one at that!) whereby just like the other subjects, it takes time to learn, practise and then master its skills in order for the student to be able to reach the full outworking potentials of this enmeshing. Art is an area where it is easier to view the outcomes of this, however, the disadvantage for other subjects is that although student progress can be equally ‘inclining’ (and important!) it is not always able to be accurately measured outwardly.

That said, it is known that encouragement and support are both highly influential if not paramount ‘forces’ behind this incline. Like a great garden needs lots of watering, attention, tending, warmth and nourishment for it to become a functional, place of enjoyment and splendour, so too do children/students need this attention and ‘encouragement’ in every part of their ‘garden’ (their life). This enables their growth in knowledge, skills, character and intelligence and gives them a platform to reach full maturity. If these processes succeed then comes the evidence. The seeing and experiencing of the fruit, flowers, scent and beauty of such labours in order to be shared by and with others.

The Learning & Creative Arts showcase was a great external example of how Parents, Students, Friends, Family, Teachers, our Principal and all Staff including Administration, Grounds and Cleaners help to support and nurture this process of growth. How exciting it is to be a part of the new patches of spring-like growth! Keep up the great work, King's College community and Art students!
