Student learning around KPS

Foundation

In Foundation, we are continuing to be word masters by making three-letter words and writing our dictation sentences.

At the end of last Term 3, we celebrated all things football with a Footy Maths day.

Grades 1and 2

On Monday we had 4 Grade 3 students visit the Grade 2 classrooms. They demonstrated 'Fluency Partners' for us. This is where you read a passage of writing to your partner for a few minutes. Then your partner provides feedback about how well you read. We focus on pace, punctuation, self-correction, and how clearly we read.

Grade 4

Year 4 are currently learning about different kinds of poems and their features. This week, we spent time outside observing our environment. We used our five senses to record what we could see, smell, hear, feel, and taste.

We really focussed on using descriptive language and similes to describe what we observed; “I can hear birds chirping as high pitched as dog toys”, and “I see cars zooming past like jets”. This Writer’s Notebook entry will be used as inspiration for when we write a ‘Senses Poem’ later in the week.

Grades 5 and 6

This week, the Year 5 students have been learning about measurement. They were given a map of the school and created a path, beginning at their classroom. They estimated the length of their path and then headed outside to measure using trundle wheels. One group was only 3m off their prediction!

The Year 6 students have been analysing - looking for theme, mood, text features, word choice and imagery etc - and also writing poetry all week. While some are still perfecting their prose, others have published already!

We’d love to share these with you!

Footy Maths Day results

On our last day of school last term we celebrated Footy Maths Day with a dress-up, maths games and footy skills activity session. Thank you to all who dressed up, you looked magnificent. As per tradition, we had a Guess the Total competition based on the numbers worn as part of our outfits. This year our school total was 7601. Congratulations to Lilah W in Grade 4 who guessed this exact number! Congratulations also to the closest estimations from each year level.
