JRC News

Research has identified a phenomenon known as the ‘summer slide’, which refers to the loss of literacy skills over the summer holidays when children do not read—estimated on average as the equivalent of two to three months of reading proficiency. Public Libraries Victoria have organized the Big Summer Read to support student reading over the break, with great prizes and giveaways on offer.  You can find more information here!

We are also organizing our own in-house competition.  We are asking students to commit to reading six appropriately challenging books through the summer holidays, approximately one each week. At the end of the holidays come to the library and grab a Big Summer Read reading log to complete and enter the draw for prizes.  Enter both competitions and double your chances of a prize!

Fully BOOKed

Our Frankston High School book club ‘Fully BOOKed’ has some suggestions or ideas for reading for our students and parents, just follow the link in the QR code below. If any parents or students would like to contribute to our Sway and recommend books they have read, we’d love for your contributions. Please email them to ejohnson@fhs.vic.edu.au

Summer reading and viewing on Smartsuite

Whilst students might not be able to borrow books from the library over the summer, they still have access to a wide range of eBooks, audiobooks and movies throughout the holidays.  ePlatform offers a huge library of popular eBooks and audiobooks, whilst Clickview and TV4Education have extensive collections of videos and movies to stream.  All three are single sign-on so once you have logged on for the first time with your Compass details, your computer will remember and do it automatically.

To access: Compass > star > Smartsuite > Clickview (located on the top menu)

                                                                              > TV4Education (top menu)

                                                                              > ePlatform (top menu)

Overdue Books

Thank you to all the students who have returned their library loans so we can do our end of year stocktake on our collection.  If you have received an overdue email reminder from Compass, please return overdue items to the Library or General Office by 19 December 2023.  Any books not returned will incur a book replacement fee charged to your school account in the New Year.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy holidays and see you next year!
