This week, Preps were excited to start their regular curriculum. They have been learning lots of letter sounds and how to count by small numbers. The highlight of the week was learning how to use the iPads and taking them home. A drawing activity was our first one completed on Seesaw. We can't wait to see what other things we will learn in Prep!
This week, we had a visit from Fun Fit! Our students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, including Yoga, Zumba, and Hula Hooping. This visit complemented what our students have been learning so far about the human body in our science topic.
Our Year 2 students have been enjoying our science unit: Kids in the Kitchen. They have explored the Food Circle to understand the different food groups. Students investigated their own lunchboxes to see what food groups they had been eating throughout the day. This investigation can be found on Seesaw.
The highlight of our science unit so far has to be making mashed potatoes! Students used their muscles to mash potatoes. All of the Year 2 students seemed to be big fans of salt, which they were eager to add to their mashed potatoes. There were many smiles when they tucked into the food they had made. The students are well on their way to becoming master chefs in the kitchen!
Students in Year 3 have delved into their Maths program the last two weeks and have been trying their best even when it is challenging! They have been enjoying using math manipulatives to support their understanding of place value and partitioning numbers. We are excited to see what knowledge your child can share with you about what they have been learning in Maths.
Our Year 4 students have enthusiastically begun our first English unit, a novel study on a verse novel called Cloud Busting which is written using different forms of poetry. Students have discussed their ideas about the characters and theme of friendship. Year 4 particularly enjoyed learning about similes while reading Cloud Busting and writing their own. They have also studied the different forms of poetry in the novel and created some of their own poems including haikus and limericks! You can enjoy reading some poems written by Year 4 students below.
On Tuesday, Year 5 participated in a First Aid Course where they learnt life saving skills and CPR. Check out the photos of SMPS students practicing on the dummies. They were fantastic at keeping the beat and never gave up, even when they felt tired.
On Friday, we had a ‘pep’ in our steps as we roamed the South Melbourne Market. The students investigated the running of the renowned market by observing customers as they shopped and asked stallholders about their jobs. Students will use this research for their upcoming project in Humanities. Stay tuned for more information!
This week, Year 6 kicked off our Term 1 Passion Projects with a focus on Crafts. The students brainstormed and chose three crafts that they will each get to create this term: friendship bracelets, shrinky paper keychains and painting on canvas. The students also took a leap into life-saving skills by learning CPR, thanks to St John's Ambulance. Empowering our youth with essential knowledge that can make a real difference. Check out these photos from Year 6!
