Term 1, Week 2
Welcome to the Grade 5/6 News Page.
What an awesome start we have had to 2024 in the Grade 5/6 Department. It seems that most students have settled in well to their new classroom environments. We have been spending a lot of time getting to know each other and setting up the expectations for the year. We are looking forward to a fun year of learning in 2024.
Week 3:
Thursday - Senior Swimming Sports 12pm - 3pm
Friday - Homework Due - Reading Log and Talk Homework
Week 4:
Friday - Homework Due - Reading Log and Maths
In reading, we will be looking at the Comprehension strategy of Making Connections. When we read, we can make connections to other texts, to ourselves and to the world around us. This strategy can help to improve our understanding and the way we relate to what we read.
We will be focusing on recounts during our writing sessions. We will be looking at how we structure a recount and investigate how we can make recounts more interesting to engage our audience. Next Thursday we will be having our first Big Write for the year. The Talk Homework will be sent home on Friday.
In Mathematics, we will begin with working on addition, subtraction and place value. Students will be working in fluid groups where the learning will target their point of need. Our applied focus will be investigating the properties of 2D shapes and 3D objects.
This term, students will be expected to complete their Talk Homework each odd week and a Mathematics task each even week. Each week, they will also be required to complete 2 hours of reading. All tasks need to be signed by a parent or guardian.
In Topic this term, we have a focus on geography, and will specifically examine 'Australia's Connection to the World'. This will involve learning all about Asia and investigating how Australia compares and connects to it.
Our STEAM focus for Term 1 will be 'Cyber Safety'. We will be strengthening our understandings on how we can keep ourselves safe while using digital technologies, through empowering students to build digital intelligence.
This term our topic is Emotional Literacy. Throughout the term, students will learn about how emotional responses influence behaviour. They will explain the influence that emotions have on behaviour, learning and relationships, and analyse factors that influence their ability to regulate emotions.
Next Thursday, 15th February, each 5/6 class will be holding their class election for SRC. They will be given time on Monday to prepare their speech during writing time and they are also encouraged to spend some time on this at home. The successful candidates will be informed on Friday.
