Hope of Nightmares

Congratulations to Charlotte Ruan of Year 8 who has written and produced artwork her first novel

“Hope of nightmares”, which was published in 2023.  An astonishing feat and one that highlights the essence of our Vermont Value of excellence.  Hope of Nightmares is a wonderful read and we wish Charlotte every success with future instalments.

Here is a little of what Charlotte had to say about writing her novel.

I started writing it in 2021 lockdown when I was in year 5. I was bored and had written some short stories before and had tried novels but usually gave up/got bored/out of ideas by the time I hit the 4k word mark. This time, I got a massive brainwave for a fantasy world and spent a few weeks putting it all into a word document and adding notes about my kingdoms and the characters.

I've always loved reading fantasy and found it fun to make up names for my characters and new mythical creatures and items. After lockdown, there was a period of six months where I didn't write - not enough time with sports, music, school and everything back on. There were many times throughout the next couple years where I would pause writing my novel for a bit. Then in 2022 I started writing at 6am-7am. I gave that up pretty quick too... I resumed my novel in 2023 term 2, writing 6:15-7:30am. Waking up early and having the peace and quiet of the morning helps me write, even tho some weekdays I couldn't because of band and basketball trainings, I still tried to write as often as I could. I finished in September last year and did some editing and tried to design the cover by myself.

Then I self published via Amazon KDP. So now there is a paperback version and an online Kindle ebook. I'm hoping to make the Eclipse series 5 books long and I'm currently working on the second!! I love writing and it's such a rewarding feeling to finally hold my book in my hands. I hope by the end of this year I finish book 2!
