Australian Jobs Report is available now
The National Career Institute have just released the 2023 version of Australian Jobs, which is a pretty good overview of the state of the labour market with some up-to-date advice for finding and securing work.
Australian Apprenticeships Website
The Australian Apprenticeships website is now up and running, replacing the AATIS and AAPathways.
It has a great section allowing exploration of apprenticeships in Priority Occupations and retains the quizzes and preparation checklist.

International Women’s Day – Women in Careers
With International Women’s Day scheduled for 8 March, and the theme ‘Inspire Inclusion’ we thought we’d find some resources to inspire our young women and their champions by sharing resources showcasing women excelling in all different careers around the world.
Women in STEM
The Girls in STEM Toolkit (GiST) has tons of stories of women crushing it in STEM careers, both in Australia and around the world. They have heaps of free resources you can explore, including interviews, videos, posters, podcasts, and more.
You can also download this set of 8 awesome posters featuring some famous women in STEM here.
Women in Aviation
Women in Aviation Careers is a resource for young girls and women who want to know all about the different careers in aviation, and how they can get there. You can read about the different career opportunities and pathways, as well as find ways to connect with women in aviation through internships and work experience.
WAI Australia also has heaps of education and outreach resources, including their Girls in Aviation Days, and the career journeys of women in aviation in their Aviation Careers Guide.
Women in Entrepreneurship
Keen to start up your own business or enterprise? You might like to get some inspiration from women who have already done it before on the UQ Ventures site. Or you might like to check out this list of the top 17 Australian women entrepreneurs.
And if you’ve already got an idea but you don’t know what to do next, you could take a look at the Academy for Enterprising Girls, where you can access workshops and other resources.
Women in Construction
Build Something Big has some great video interviews of women working in a variety of different roles in the construction industry. You can even book to speak with some of the women directly and ask more questions.
Women Building Australia also has a National Mentoring Program for women new to the industry looking for support, encouragement and advice.
Women in Defence
In 2022, the participation rate of women in the permanent Australian Defence Force reached 20.1%, and the participation rate of women in the Defence Australian Public Service reached 46.7%, figures that keep rising every year (source).

We encourage all our students to create a free account and make use of this resource.
Year 10 students might find the Work Experience Student Toolkit really handy.
Senior students might find the Open Day Calendar particularly useful for planning.
For parents and carers wanting to find out more, there is a suite of resources available. Of particular note are some great upcoming webinars relating to supporting career development for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds including who identify as having a disability, refugee and migrant background and First Nation connection. Victorian Government Teaching Career Programs
In an effort to assist with teacher shortages the Government has a range of incentives in place to attract suitable people to the teaching profession.

Are you interested in pursuing an Apprenticeship or Traineeship?
Even though you have just started the schooling year, your planning should start now.
Australian Apprenticeships have detailed support for any considering this option.
You can also do the following during the year to prepare for an apprenticeship:
- Meet with your Career Adviser to start planning your career
- Take the Australian Apprenticeship Readiness/Preparation Checklist
- Undertake work placement in several fields or with several employers in the same field.
- Contact industry leaders and associations in your fields of interest to ask questions.
- Contact local apprenticeship centres and/or group training organisations to ask their advice on what makes a competitive apprenticeship applicant. Use the following website to locate organisations in your local area.
- Work hard in your English and Mathematics classes and VET/technology/science subjects if relevant. With advances in technology occurring across all apprenticeship fields, it will be crucial that you can read and interpret complex information and instructions and adapt to changes in technology during your apprenticeship and once qualified.

Applying for a Australian Tax File Number
Any student will need at tax file number if they starts work (casual, part-time and full-time) and all students planning on a tertiary education require one when they start. Importantly, current Year 12 students are reminded that they cannot enrol in a CSP course at university without a Tax File Number, so it is worthwhile getting an application submitted early! Students must apply for a TFN online and have their identity verified through an interview at a participating Australia Post office. Careers with impact – 80000hrs The Highest Impact Career Paths
80,000 hours – The highest impact career paths is a not-for-profit based in the UK that wants to help us use our careers to take action and make an impact. They break down impactful career paths into a series of categories:

This could be a great resource for students who are driven to make a difference and looking to make an impact with their careers. They go on to list a stack of careers where young people could drive change, and this could be used with students and others as an exploration tool, or just to start conversations about what might be possible outside of the traditional pathways
Labour Market Update – From Jobs and Skills Australia
The February 2024 International Labour Market Update report is now available.This quarter we see that labour markets remained tight in the second half of 2023 and global shortages were high in the care, transport, retail, manufacturing, construction, and information and communications technology sectors. The global labour market remained resilient in a time of slow economic growth with the global unemployment rate declining to pre-pandemic levels of 5.1%.
Furthermore the local February 2024 Labour Market Update references long-term trends, such as the growth of Health Care and Social Assistance and Community and Personal Service Workers.
Australian Skills Classification Similar Occupations – one way of finding out where your skills could fit, the ASC has a handy tool that allows you to search by role to find roles that use the same set of skills, which could be great to use with clients who are transitioning mid-career or seeking additional options for careers using their existing skills-set.
