The 73rd Annual Science Talent Search

The Science Teachers’ Association of Victoria Inc. invites all students at Auburn South Primary School to enter this year’s Science Talent Search. You may enter as an individual or as part of a group of two. You may enter into one or more of the Sections described in the handbook.

Why enter the Science Talent Search?

Apart from it being a long-standing ASPS tradition, its significance lies in its opportunity to provide authentic open-ended inquiry. As an IB school we want to help our students develop a broader understanding and application of science and technology in the wider community.  The Science Talent Search is a program that allows children to experience science inquiries through open project work.  In doing so, it develops the attitudes and dispositions highlighted in the IB Learner Profile, as well as the Approaches to Learning (ATL), the skills deemed critical for IB students in school and life.

All students who enter will be eligible for awards such as bursaries and/or certificates.

The school theme for National Science Week in 2024 is Species Survival- More than just sustainability.  It focuses on how scientific innovation has a role to play when ensuring the survival and thriving of different species in an everchanging world.  Please note other scientific themes and topics are welcome but it is encouraged that the project topic relates to the theme.

Please see the handbook that describes in detail the competition: Handbook

If stuck on which section to enter, the Primary Creative Writing- picture story book section is always a fun one to enter, as well as the poster category.

Sections open to any scientific topic or theme: Experimental Research, Working Models, Inventions, Video Productions, Games, Computer Programs and Science Photography.

Once you decide the section you’d like to enter please forward the details of your entry as well as the payment in a sealed envelope to the school office by Friday 24 May.   The fee is $9.00 for individual entries and $17.00 for group (maximum 2 students) entries.

Year 6 Leadership - ASPIRE Higher 2

On the 15th of February, the Year 6 cohort had their second ASPIRE HIGHER incursion where Gil and Jamie visited our school from the company U.P.P (Unleashing Personal Potential - Student leadership and wellbeing) and gave the Year 6 cohort a full day of fun filled activities like team work challenges to build towers and creative structures using jenga blocks. This built on our previous years of leadership and positive peer relationship training with the team.

At the end of the day we challenged our skills by working in bigger groups, we were split in to our classes (6A, 6B, and 6C) where we had to complete tasks like keepy uppy with a yoga ball and trying to get the whole classes over the skipping rope aiming for the lowest time, the main taker ways from this experience are that teamwork makes the dreamwork and that as year 6 leaders we have leadership filled year ahead of us.

Year 6 Jumper Ceremony

On the 22nd of February the Year 6 classes of 2024 had their first important event of the year where they were presented with their Year 6 jumpers.

In which they represent the leadership that the students now hold as the school's leaders. All the students are looking forward to the year they have before them and all the fun things coming up!

Save the Date: Mother's Day Lunch

Our highly anticipated ASPS Mother’s Lunch will be held on Wednesday 8th May.

A slightly different experience this year (a change is as good as a holiday right?)

Venue is Panama Dining on Smith Street Fitzroy. A 3 Course meal with French bubbles on arrival. But don’t stress, we are organizing a bus to transport guests to pick up from ASPS. For those that can get out of school pick up, we will continue on at Panama (once lunch is complete) at their cocktail bar.

Tables will be up made up of 12 guests so get your tables set! If you can’t make a table don’t stress, we can make it work!

We are looking forward to yet another amazing and memorable day with our amazing ASPS mums and carers.

Make sure you get your tickets quickly because trust us when we say this, you do not want to miss out this year! Seats and tickets are limited.

Volunteering at ASPS

After reviewing our current processes, we have developed a Parent/Volunteer Helper Handbook.

Going forward, all volunteers at ASPS (sporting events, classroom reading, excursions, SAKG, canteen etc.) will be required to read this handbook and return the two signed forms, along with their WWC, to the office.

Once this has occurred, then you can volunteer at ASPS.

Please find the Parent/Volunteer Helper Handbook below:
