Hands On Learning

After a week off with the students exploring Melbourne, we returned to Hands on Learning with our feet firmly on the ground and our eyes to the sky.

Over the past few months, the storms have taken a toll on the Lone Pine flag poles, causing them to be a danger to those nearby. Today’s task, relay the foundations.

It was interesting for the students to see that to build up we must dig down, in a way taking us further from where we want to go. That’s the thing about life, short cuts rarely work and mostly we go backward to go forward. Learning always takes place, just the type of lesson we learn from changes. I’ve got to sit down now; my head is swimming.

We worked with concrete and spirit levels, we used volume and ratios and held it together with sweat and perseverance. There is a certain type of pride and satisfaction that comes with doing something of great importance, like raising the national flag. Our crew can now look forward to being reminded of this whenever they pass by with our 100 year warranty, of this importance and the value of doing things the right way.

Today at HoL Lachie, Kaylee and I put some new flag poles in the ground. Then we went to GTS because we had no washers.

Then we had to make sure it was level. We put in some concrete and mixed it. For lunch we had Krensky’s that Amber cooked and they were so good.

Spat goes the concrete in the muddy hole! Our job today was to dig out holes for our new flag poles because they went tumble, tumble in the big storm. We had to get a massive long bolt with three washers and one nut, but we ran into a sticky situation where the nut would not go on. So we had Brett sign us out of school so we could run down the street to our favourite place, GTS. Lucky for us they had just what we needed, ten washers the same size. We had a lot on our plate to do but we got it all done. For lunch we had Kransky’s, luck for Amber she got to cook. She cooked the bacon, onion and Kransky’s. We also had cheese and tomato sauce. Thank you very much for reading our work about Hands on Learning, we hope you had just as much fun as we had today. Written by Amber and Kaylee. Bye.

Today pt HoL, Kayden, Amber, Kaylee and I fixed the flag poles and set the water for the garden. Oh and Amber made lunch, she made Kransky’s.
