Year 11 Geography Trip to Sovereign Hill

Our Year 11 geography students recently embarked on a trip to Sovereign Hill as part of their Unit 2 studies, focusing on tourism. The excursion provided a unique opportunity to experience firsthand how tourism plays a crucial role in preserving history while contributing to the economy.

Throughout the day, students explored the living museum, which recreates life during the 1850s Gold Rush era. They participated in guided tours that highlighted the ways Sovereign Hill balances the preservation of historical authenticity with the needs of modern-day visitors. From learning about the economic impact of tourism on the region to discussing the environmental and social sustainability of the site, students gained valuable insights into the challenges and benefits of managing a major tourist attraction.

In addition to the educational aspects, students had the chance to enjoy some of Sovereign Hill’s fun activities, making the day even more memorable. They watched an impressive gold pour demonstration, tried their hands at candle making, and even enjoyed a lively session of ten-pin bowling, 1850s style. These activities gave students a taste of the types of experiences that help attract and engage tourists.

The trip allowed students to see how marketing, heritage conservation, and tourism management in a real-world context. It was a busy day that just managed to avoid the torrential downpours and only had to cope with them on the bus there and back.

Year 10 Work Experience

During Week 3 of Term 4 twelve Year 10 students took part in a week of work experience at an employer of their choice. While most students undertook their work experience in Donald, some took the opportunity to venture beyond Donald with students placed at Ballarat, Birchip, Dooen and Inglewood. This was a fantastic experience for our students. For some it affirmed their interest in the career and for others it helped them to realise, that perhaps it wasn’t for them. Regardless of which outcome it was, it is certainly a valuable experience and it will help them with their ongoing career planning. The student evaluations that I have received back from the employers have been extremely positive, with all students receiving glowing reports. Thanks must go to the employers, who took our students on, we could not do it without their assistance.
