Marble Runs: Creativity in Motion
As part of our unit of inquiry “How the world works”, Year 2 students have been working in groups to design and build their own marble runs.
An important part of our marble run project was teamwork and students enjoyed working with a classmate of their choice to collaborate, design and build their marble run. Using a mix of recycled materials, students planned out their structures using knowledge gained throughout the unit and were encouraged to feature creative elements like vortexes, tubes, and materials to create friction to help control the marble’s speed.
It’s been wonderful to see the students problem-solving skills in action as they tested and adjusted their designs to ensure their marble was as slow as possible!
To celebrate the student’s success with this project, students showed off their creations to their fellow year 2 peers. We timed each group as they proudly demonstrated their marble runs in action. We were pleased to have a group from each year 2 class feature in the top 3, with Emmerson, Summer and Ruby from 2C taking the out win with their time of 7.3 seconds. Well done!
To conclude the unit, we invited students from year 4 down to view our marble runs. Please enjoy looking at the photos showcasing the students' achievements.
The year 2 teachers are incredibly proud of all the students’ efforts throughout this project and are excited to commence our final unit of inquiry “How we organise ourselves” to conclude the year.

Mapping Skills in Maths
In Maths, students have been learning all about maps. Students have been learning how to use grid references to locate places of interest on maps and have been learning how to use directional language when describing turns and changes in direction.
Students learning has included them making their own maps of animal farms with directions to different places of interest, playing interactive games such as battleship and partner activities focussed on giving and receiving directions.
Through these activities, students are beginning to understand how to use directions, compass points and symbols which has been beneficial in developing both their spatial awareness and critical thinking skills. Ask your child to explain what a “legend” is on a map – they’ll be excited to share!
We have also been busy practising for the end of year concert to be held on Thursday November 28. Students have been working hard and have shown great energy and enthusiasm during rehearsals. We look forward to celebrating the wonderful year we have had with year 2 families on this special night.
