CSNSW Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Conference
Hosted by Armidale Catholic Schools, the conference provided a unique opportunity for educators to advance their professional knowledge and skills, improve educational outcomes, and champion reconciliation among families and communities based on their improved understanding of culture.
Attendees explored the implications of NSW Curriculum Reform’s explicit inclusion of Aboriginal Histories across all syllabuses. The conference also provided an opportunity to experience the rich cultural significance of Aboriginal connection to land and the role it has in the spiritual, educational, cultural and economic wellbeing of Aboriginal peoples.
Throughout the 3-day event, presentations, workshops and on-country experiences were designed to develop educators’ intercultural skills and knowledge. They were intended to build understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures through:
the awareness of history, the learning of intercultural and cross-cultural skills, a deepened awareness of what supports the creation of inclusive, intercultural classrooms.
It was an opportunity to play an active role in the reconciliation process by strengthening existing networks by sharing, collaborating, and celebrating colleagues’ achievements.
This conference provided a special time for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples across the 11 Dioceses and RI/MPJP schools in NSW, to connect and come together.
Our St. Philomena's Catholic School Primary and Secondary Aboriginal Students too part in the conference with our primary dancers dancing at the opening ceremony in front of hundreds of people on country at Myall Creek.
Our students performed in a group that was made up of students from Wee Waa, Walgett and Narrabri.
The celebrations continued with our secondary dancers performing at the Gala Dinner in front of an enormous crowd on stage. Our students performed their contemporary dance along side their teacher Shae Duncan and then to their surprise Sean Choolburn asked our students to return to the stage for a dance and laugh with him.
Our school and AEA team are so very proud of our deadly students!
