FOUNDATION
We had such a fantastic week last week celebrating Book Week!
As readers, we continued to explore and unpack some of the shortlisted texts. We made connections, shared new facts, identified and produced different rhyming words and summarised the stories' beginning, middle and end. On Tuesday, we were lucky enough to have an author, Sofie Laguna, visit St Fidelis. Sofie Laguna has written various children's picture books and novels, including a book titled ‘My Yellow Blanky’. Sofie shared how she wanted to become an actress, but became an author instead. Therefore, it was only fitting that this story was presented to us in the form of a show starring some of our wonderful St Fidelis students. She also shared with us how she puts all of her ideas into a little journal, encouraging us to create our very own one too! Thank you Sofie for your time, we loved having you and can’t wait to read more of your stories.
As researchers, we also had the opportunity to visit the book fair and check out some of the amazing books we might like to purchase.
Later in the week, we participated in our very first Book Week parade at St Fidelis. We certainly are becoming experts at parading in front of everyone! There was an array of smiles and laughter as princesses, superheroes, and many different book characters entered the learning space. What an amazing assortment of costumes there were, including Mary Poppins, Disney Princesses, Super Heroes, Cat in the Hat, Where’s Wally, Hey Jack, Room on a Broom, an Oompa Loompa, Magical Unicorns, Gymnastic Fantastica, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and Harry Potter just to name a few!
And of course, there were some of the characters from The Wizard of Oz, presented by Mrs Wenckcowski, Miss Marsico, Ms Pirrotta, Mrs Watson and Ms Ange. As writers, we wrote descriptions of our costumes and drew detailed, labelled diagrams. It was a fantastic day!
We hope you all enjoy the week ahead and look forward to seeing you in Week 8 at our Celebration of Learning, which will be in the Foundation learning spaces from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 5th.

YEAR 1/2
We have just stepped into the second half of Term 3. It has been so wonderful to see how much growth the students have made from the beginning of the year! We had a special visit from Sofie Laguna, a children’s author who has received many awards for her writing. Her visit with the students included a read-aloud of ‘My Yellow Blanket’ whilst students had the opportunity to role-play. All the students were captured by her engaging storytelling, and it was definitely an experience to remember. At the end of the session, students shared their curiosity by asking lots of wonderful questions!
As readers and writers, we have been continuing to consolidate different sounds. This week, we are looking back and revising the spelling patterns that we have covered this term, to ensure that we have consolidated these. Below are some words you might like to practise with your child at home. These spelling patterns are: tch, igh, dge, igh, ear and split digraphs. Below are some examples:
This year's Book Week celebration was definitely one to remember! We had the chance to read many of the shortlisted books. It was fantastic to see the effort students have put into dressing up as their favourite book character. It is always important to foster a love for reading in the junior years. Even the teachers were very excited to share their costumes and one of their favourite childhood stories, The Magic School Bus!

YEAR 3/4
As STEM innovators, we collaborated in our teams to continue designing our display booth for the Art/STEM showcase in Term 4. The purpose of our display booth is to showcase our prototype and share with the community how we are making a difference.
As members of a faith community, 3/4BP and 3/4SH gathered in our school church to attend Mass. Thank you to our wonderful readers for participating in the Responsorial Psalm and Prayers of the Faithful.
As readers and writers, we welcomed a special visitor to our school to share her creative skills and her success as an Australian author. Sofie Laguna shared with us her tips and tricks for story writing and how young children can become writers. Our favourite Sofie Laguna book is The House on Pleasant Street.
As scientists, we engaged in a fun day exploring different experiments in small groups. We made gooey oobleck, watched popcorn dance and launched a balloon rocket. Thank you to the teachers, ESOs and parents who assisted us with these experiments. Your time was greatly appreciated!
Have a lovely week!

YEAR 5/6
We have had a wonderful and busy week of fun and learning of course!
In STEM class, Mr.Frazzetto introduced us to some exciting Design Sprint Challenges! We tackled three tasks: creating a design for a robot that could either push, collect and return objects, or move in innovative ways. The students began by sketching their ideas and designing their Spike Robots, and then they moved on to building their creations.
We delved into the fascinating world of geometry, focusing on angles. The students explored various types of angles, including acute, right, straight, and obtuse, and learned how to identify and measure each one. They also learned how to identify complementary and supplementary angles. The students engaged in activities that brought these concepts to life, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of the geometry that surrounds us every day.
Throughout the week, we delved into a variety of books nominated for the CBCA Book Week national awards. We explored and engaged with these books through various learning opportunities and discussions. Friday was especially delightful as we celebrated with a Book Week parade and enjoyed delicious treats from our local village bakery! Thank you to all the parents/caregivers who went above and beyond to help their child dress up on Friday, your efforts were amazing!
Last week, we welcomed Miss Chloe, who is on her final placement in 5/6BZ for her teaching degree. We look forward to you meeting her.
We hope you have a wonderful week!
