The Power of Speaking in Public

Public speaking is important for primary school students. It requires them to speak clearly and use appropriate voice and pace. Speaking in front of others is a life skill that benefits children in countless ways.

It helps them:

  • Build confidence: Speaking in front of others can be daunting, but with practice, children can overcome their fears and develop self-assurance
  • Improve communication skills: Public speaking requires clear and concise communication. It helps children articulate their thoughts effectively and listen attentively to others
  • Enhance critical thinking: When preparing a speech or presentation, children must analyse information, organise their ideas, and adapt to their audience
  • Develop leadership qualities: Public speaking often involves taking initiative, inspiring others, and influencing opinions. These skills are essential for leadership roles both in and out of the classroom

How does drama and performing help with public speaking?

Drama provides a safe and supportive environment for children to explore public speaking. It provides the opportunity for students to showcase their talents with friends and develop their confidence through public performance.

Through role-playing, improvisation, and performing, children can:

  • Gain experience: Acting in front of an audience allows children to practice speaking confidently and expressively
  • Develop character: Drama helps children understand different perspectives and develop empathy
  • Learn teamwork: Collaborating with others on a play or performance fosters teamwork and communication skills
  • Have fun: Drama is a creative and enjoyable activity that can spark a lifelong passion for the arts.

How to Support Your Child

  • Encourage Practice: Help your child practice speeches or presentations at home
  • Attend Performances: Show your support by attending their drama productions
  • Provide Positive Feedback: Offer constructive criticism and praise to boost their confidence
  • Lead by Example: Demonstrate effective communication skills yourself.

By encouraging students to participate in drama, performance and public speaking activities, we are investing in their future success. We are building and developing their self-confidence,  promoting self-motivation and self-expression.

Public speaking skills will serve them well throughout their academic and professional careers.
