Sacrament of Confirmation
Friday 16th of August, 2024
Confirmation is the third sacrament of initiation and on Friday the 16th of August most of the Grade 6’s renewed their vows their parents once made to God. We prepared for the sacrament during Religion this term, and practised walking in the church during the week. On the night, the people being confirmed lined up in three class rows in roll order, their sponsors next to them and quietly walked to the church. Everyone was definitely dressed to the occasion! Both the Priest and Bishop were there and as the mass commenced, some students came up to read sections from the Bible and the Prayers of the Faithful. At one point of the mass, all of the confirmation candidates and their sponsors stood in front of the Bishop in a line, the sponsor’s hand to the applicant's right shoulder as the Bishop said your confirmation name and chrism oil was placed your forehead. Soon after, we stood up to renew our vows of christianity to God, other students from different schools were also confirmed along with us.
My sponsor was my grandma because she’s one of my favourite people and one of the first people that came to my mind. I chose St. Cecilia for my saint name as she’s the patron saint of music. I think music is a part of a lot of people, sometimes it tells you to ‘slow down’ or sometimes ‘keep going’ and Cecilia was also a really devoted person to God, she stayed true to herself and never gave up. The night of confirmation felt exciting and a little confusing, but I think everyone involved in the important sacrament felt extra special that night.

On the 16th of August it was the year sixes Confirmation. Our Confirmation was a very important day for us. On our special day we had a sponsor with us. They stood with their right hand on our right shoulder while the Bishop blessed us. My sponsor was my sister, Kim. I chose her because she has always been an important part of my life, so I wanted her to be there next to me on the special night. I think the year sixes did an amazing job. We were very reverent and respectful. I had an amazing night and I thank the Year 6 teachers that helped us with the lead up and on the important night, Father Andrew, the Bishop, Mrs Marshall and all the amazing teachers who helped with the music (Mrs De Wilde, Miss W, Miss Habuda and Ms Rambert).

We arrived at school at 5:15 pm and gathered with our sponsors inside the school, while our families entered the church. We received our stoles and Confirmation cards and started processing into the church. Inside, the bishop and priest were waiting and all of the pews were full apart from the reserved ones for us. Once we entered the church, the Mass began and after a while it was time for Confirmation. All candidates walked out one by one to the Bishop and Father Andrew, to receive their Confirmation blessing. Next, everyone was called to the front one after the other to receive their certificates. At the end of Mass families and friends took photos and enjoyed everyone’s company.
