My flesh is real food and my blood is real drink - John 6:51-58

In this week’s passage, Jesus tells his disciples, “I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.” The Jews around him argue about what this means, asking, “How can this man give us flesh to eat?” Jesus replies, “As I, who am sent by the living Father, draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me will draw life from me… anyone who eats this bread will live forever.”

In response to this passage, we can reflect on two expressions. The first is, “You are what you eat.” In a very real sense, our bodies reflect the types of food that we consume. If we are eating junk food and not taking care of ourselves, our bodies will eventually become unhealthy. This might not happen overnight, but the effects accumulate slowly. Holy Communion is our spiritual food—it’s not about gaining muscular arms, but rather about becoming spiritually strong. When we are deprived of Communion, we can find ourselves spiritually starved. We might be hungry and not even realize it! In this Scripture reading, Jesus is calling us to partake in Communion so that we are well-fed and nourished for the journey ahead.

But it isn’t only about what we eat; it’s also about those with whom we share a meal. Another expression suggests that if you want to know a person’s character, look at the company they keep. It can be challenging to maintain a perfect diet or live a healthy lifestyle alone. We need the support of those around us to cheer us on and support us. In this way, Communion is not just about coming to church to eat a wafer and then going home—the real action is in the conversations after Mass! Just as when we go out to dinner, while we may all enjoy the food on offer, the best part is the laughter and conversation that happens.

This week, Jesus offers us a hand-up as we navigate a difficult world. He is first giving us the spiritual food we need so that we are energized to make good decisions, and He provides us with a community to support us. Throughout the week, reflect on how you are setting yourself up for success. Are you keeping positive people around you? Are you taking care of your well-being so that you can care for others? Are you giving yourself time for prayer and reflection?
