Year 12 Biology Students Explore Real-World Science at GTAC

On Thursday 21st, our Year 12 Biology students had the exciting opportunity to extend their classroom learning through a hands-on workshop at the Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC), supporting their Unit 4 Biology curriculum.

During the session, students worked as scientists to investigate a simulated outbreak of mastitis in a dairy herd. They performed diagnostic tests to identify the causative agent of the infection and analysed antibiotic sensitivity results to determine the most effective treatment option. In the second part of the workshop, students applied their understanding of acquired immunity by performing an ELISA test to track the primary and secondary immune responses to a tetanus vaccine in cattle.

This immersive experience not only deepened their understanding of key biological concepts but also highlighted the real-world application of science in agriculture and medicine.

A big congratulations to our students for their engagement and enthusiasm, and a sincere thank you to GTAC for providing such a valuable and inspiring learning experience.
