YEAR 10 WOODWORK

Year 10 Woodwork Students Step Up for the Community

The Year 10 Woodwork class has recently taken on a fantastic community project, helping to craft pedestal stands for Carniya Lodge. After the local Men’s Shed found themselves too busy to take on the job, Carniya Lodge reached out for assistance—and our students, under the guidance of Mr. Cronin and Dawso, were more than happy to lend a hand.

The project involves constructing 15 pedestal stands. So far, students have been hard at work laminating and shaping the tops and bases of each stand, ensuring all edges are smooth and safe. They’ve also been carefully drilling holes to house the spindle pins that will join the components together.

With time constraints due to their own class projects, Dawso has taken on the majority of the spindle turning. However, several students have also had the opportunity to try their hand at woodturning—a valuable learning experience. Under Dawso’s expert guidance, they’ve begun to understand how different turning tools interact with timber and the specific purposes of each tool.

This hands-on project not only benefits Carniya Lodge but also gives our students real-world experience in craftsmanship, collaboration, and community service. Well done to all involved!
