No words?

Our Year 7 students are reading and analysing a novel, No Words by Maryam Master.

The story, told by multiple narrators, centres around a young 12-year-old refugee who is trying to establish a new life in Australia. He grapples with his past and in the process finally finds his voice. Along his journey, he finds he is able to express how he is feeling through poems and by associating emotions and states of being with colour and sound.

Year 7 students selected 5 colours each and linked sounds, states of being and emotions with each colour. They then used these as stimuli for a poem.

Here are some of their poems.

The sound of the church bells echo through the willow,
The bright sun rays creeping through the stained window,
Emerald seats overcrowding the hall,
Reflecting lights like a disco ball.
But now we must leave,
It’s time for farewell,
We will never forget,
The sound of that bell.

Blue

Blue is lonely,
Blue is falling in love next to ocean waves,
Blue is silent skies,
Blue is painting a boat lost at sea,
Blue is the calm in the storm.

Promise made to always care,
In your heart I’m always there.
Never far no need to roam,
Knowing with you I’m at home.
