Immersed in Modern History

Vietnam War Museum, Phillip Island

Belinda Kemp

Head of Learning - Humanities

On Wednesday 20 August, our Year 11 Modern History students travelled to Phillip Island to visit the Vietnam Veterans Museum, gaining powerful insights into one of the most significant conflicts in Australia’s history.

Departing early by bus, students were warmly welcomed by the museum’s education officer, Wendy, who began the day with a mock Conscription Ballot. This activity gave students a vivid sense of the uncertainty faced by young Australians during the period of our involvement in Vietnam War. It also encouraged empathy for those whose lives were so dramatically altered by the conflict.

The visit continued with an immersive hologram presentation outlining Australia’s role in the conflict, followed by the chance to examine real and replica artefacts including radios, land mines, uniforms, rations, and gas canisters. Students particularly enjoyed the opportunity to try on clothing and handle equipment, which brought history to life in an engaging, hands-on way.

A highlight of the excursion was a guided tour of the museum, where students listened intently to the personal stories of some of our Australian veterans. Their respectful questions and thoughtful engagement made the experience both moving and memorable.

Though the return trip left everyone a little weary, students came back with a much deeper understanding of the Vietnam War and a renewed appreciation for the sacrifices of those who served.

Jem Baker

Year  11

I learned about how complex the Vietcong tunnel systems were and how they were able to transport supplies through miles of small caves and passages.

Olivia Harper

Year  11

I really enjoyed seeing the artifacts and getting a chance to hold and touch them. I have never see the inside of a tank, and that was really interesting.

Caitlyn Slade

Year  11

I liked looking around the museum and it gave a different insight to what actually happened. I also really found Doug's stories really stood out, as he shared his first-hand experience.

Lucas Pisano

Year  11

I enjoyed hearing about the experiences of the veterans who were the tour guides at the museum.
