Working it out

The new opt-in work experience program at BSC has been a big success this year, with students from across Years 10 to 12 taking the opportunity to explore potential career pathways.

It’s been fantastic to see so many students take the initiative to 'road test' what a future career might look like, and another way for them to gain practical skills, build professional networks, and understand the day-to-day realities of a job.  A highlight of the new structure is the opportunity for Year 12 students to use work experience as a final chance to gain clarity on their pathway before they finish high school. Nine of our students made the most of this chance to see if their intended career path truly matches their expectations and interests.

We were thrilled to see the variety of placements students secured this year. Some standout examples include:

  • Sound Design at Bang Bang Studios in Southbank - A student interested in the music and production industry got hands-on experience in a professional studio environment.

  • Horse Care and Training at Valley Park Riding School - For a student passionate about animals and equine studies, this placement provided invaluable insight into the hard work and dedication required in the industry.

  • Dental Assisting at Coburg Dental Group - This provided a clear look at the healthcare field, allowing a student to observe the daily operations of a busy dental practice.

  • Guitar Repair and Sales at Clingan Guitar Tone: A perfect fit for a keen musician, this placement blended creative passion with technical skills.

  • Law at Baraka Lawyers: This experience offered a great opportunity for a student considering a legal career to see what life is like in a law office.

Looking ahead, Term 4 is an excellent time to do work experience. The holidays provide a perfect window for students to search for and approach employers, without the pressure of school commitments. Many businesses are open to hosting students and appreciate the initiative of a well-prepared approach.

Ready to find your own work experience placement?

Start by thinking about your interests and then research local businesses in that field. You can also use the work experience database spreadsheet as a starting point.

Don't be afraid to make a phone call, drop into the business in person, or send a professional email. Remember, every experience—big or small—helps you learn and grow.
