Year 12 student, Eddie Combridge has taken an exciting step in his career - leaving school early to pursue his carpentry apprenticeship on a full time basis.
Eddie’s pathway began back in Years 10 & 11, when he completed VET Carpentry studies and Structured Workplace Learning with a plumber.
“I did this to help decide what I wanted to do as a career,” Eddie explains. “Ultimately, I decided on carpentry. It fits my interests more and it is what I like doing.”
When he started Year 12, Eddie found an employer willing to take him on as a school-based apprentice. With the help of Penny Moffat (BSC VET Coordinator), everything was organised and Eddie began his part-time apprenticeship in February while continuing with his VCE Vocational Major certificate.
“I haven’t found it too challenging - you just have to keep up with the work,” Eddie says. “My boss wanted me to work full-time from the start, but I really wanted to get my VCE so I negotiated. Now, as at September 11th, I am a full-time carpentry apprentice!”
Eddie says he will miss being around people his own age but is excited about this next step.
“It’s a bit different - learning off tradies rather than teachers. I’m looking forward to doing something I’m passionate about. Well, apart from when it’s cold - then it’s not quite as good. Summer is so good - but when it rains, not so much!” he laughs.
Eddie also has advice for other students considering a trade.
“Do something you’re passionate about. Don’t just chase money or ease - you want to actually likewhat you are doing.”
Congratulations, Eddie! We are proud of the work you have done at Brunswick Secondary School and at your VET studies. You have been a valuable member of the Year 12 VM team this year. We wish you all the best as you begin this exciting new chapter – see you at Graduation!
