This year we held our first Performing Arts Pathways Panel, and it proved to be a highlight of Performing Arts Week. Students heard from a diverse group of industry professionals who offered a rare glimpse into the realities of working in the arts.
The panel, featured Tom Browne of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, dance lecturer Nicole Corea, and sound designer (our own alumnus) Declan Acton, the multifaceted artist Irine Vela, and performer Taj Aldeeb. Led by Performing Arts Captain Emily Lynch, this event was a masterclass in honest and inspiring conversation with the discussion digging deep into the most pressing questions for aspiring artists.
One of the most valuable takeaways was the candid talk about the day-to-day tasks of roles in the industry. All five speakers emphasised that the skill that they use most is... communication.
Tom Browne discussed having to negotiate tricky contracts, Irine talked about managing competing needs of cast members and Declan mentioned the challenges of communicating with both directors and cast members on creative choices. All the speakers agreed that strong communication, teamwork and resilience are key to a successful career in the arts.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of a portfolio that truly represents an individual's unique voice. When asked about applications for entrance into the Victorian College of the Arts, the message was clear: authenticity and passion matter more than perfection. The speakers emphasised that the performing arts are about collaboration and storytelling, skills that are developed both on and off the stage.
Ultimately, the event wasn't just about technical advice; it was about the heart of what it means to be a creator. The speakers’ shared love for their work (even with its challenges) was a powerful reminder that a career in the arts is a pursuit of joy and meaning.
Thank you to our incredible speakers and to everyone who attended and participated in such a successful and thought-provoking event.
The insights shared will inspire our students as they consider their own creative futures.
