CLASSROOM NEWS!

Prep/1 News

What a busy, but exciting fortnight we have had. Book Week was a major highlight for our Prep/1 students, who all came in dressed as their favourite book characters. Thank you to all our parents for the effort you went to, to get costumes organised.

In Literacy we have been learning about compound sentences and the coordinating conjunctions, 'and', 'but', 'so'. Our Grade 1 students have been practising their sentence writing skills by developing their own sentences using these words, while the Prep students have been learning how to write words and sentences independently by listening to the sounds they hear in words and writing these down.

During Maths, we have been learning about multiplicative thinking, and how to share equally. Students had a lot of fun making echidnas and sharing out spikes to ensure they all had an equal amount.

News from the 2/3 Room

The 2/3s have had an exciting couple of weeks as they have begun to watch the beautiful Melbourne Falcons live stream at 367 Collins St. The family of falcons - which we observed last year - have come back to roost and have so far laid 3 eggs. We have been watching a little each day to see how the mum and dad (we've deemed Colin and Colleen) have been taking care of one another!

In Literacy, students have been continuing to work on their poetry, specifically focussing on the poetic devices simile and onomatopoeia. In InitiaLit grammar, we have been learning about verb tenses and conjugating verbs. In spelling, we have focused on silent letters (ie. B in lamb) and the appropriate time to us C and K in words. Finally, we've continued our focus on summarising in comprehension and storybook lessons, and have thoroughly enjoyed summarising some exciting chapters of Harry Potter together (Harry nearly got expelled!?) It would be wonderful if you could encourage your child to summarise the next time you're reading together.

In Maths over the past fortnight, students have been focussed on using arrays to visualise multiplication equations and understand the connection between multiplication and repeated addition, and the inverse of multiplication; division. They have worked successfully with Maths "buddies" to unpack concepts together using games and real-world ideas such as planning a veggie garden. The vocabulary the students have been using includes "arrays" "product" "groups of" "__ by __" "__ multiplied by " and "__ times by __". We hope to share our finished veggie gardens with you at assembly this week, such as Chloe's work in progress above.

4/5/6  Classrooms

In literacy, we have been working on adding to our Poetry wall at the back of our classroom, if you haven't already wondered in and checked it out, please do so as your child/ren have been working really well and really hard on these.

In math, we have just finished working on area and perimeter. We created our names on grid paper and calculated the area and perimeter of each of the letters in out name. Again the children have been working really hard on these.

 Melbourne C in Bridgewater

The Melbourne Cup’s journey to the big race on the first Tuesday of November passed through Bridgewater today. We at IPS were invited to participate in a fun afternoon of races and fashions on the field. The Loddon Shire kindly bought each student and some lucky teachers an ice-cream!

Congratulations to Mads and Skyla, who won their events- running 1200 metres!
